I swear the gays on Sputnikmusic love PJ Harvey. Me being one of them.

I have heard Dress in a gay bar once, maybe she IS gay culture music
At least in an indie sense

Hasn't she always challenged the perceptions of how women are / should be viewed, to an extent? Seems to have that edge in some of her music anyway (idk shit about her as a person tbh so this may be complete nonsense). I can see why musicians (or anyone) who has a 'no apologies approach' to who they are and how they're perceived, could appeal to that community (for obvious reasons).

As for the album, it still doesn't appear to be making any further impression on me. I do like the tracks which (almost) include the title. I'll come back here at some point, but will likely let it marinate for a while and revisit some of PJ's other stuff first.

Sits right between a 3 and a 3.5
Albums like that annoy me

I have absolutely no legs to stand on for drawing this comparison, but something about this album's vibe reminds me of last year's Shearwater album. Every song seems understated, they're all "just pretty good I guess" at first, but the more you listen the more it grows. That said, I think The Great Awakening has a little more going for it than this. Just similar lo-fi/subtle grower vibes.

It's a 3.5 but I only rate 4/5 and above so sadly can't add this one to the PJ collection

I have settled on a 3.5 but…still waiting for that to feel totally earned
Sowing - I respect the subtlety here, not sure Shearwater was the brand of subtle I was hearing but will keep that comparison in mind next listen

Read the lyrics in depth maybe? It helps make the album’s themes really work
About a child basically seeing a weird ghost she relates to Elvis despite being set in an old timey world

I can’t see that enhancing anything tbh 😆

Idk it’s kinda cool
Story based albums etc (it’s based off an epic poem she wrote a few years back, which is odd to make a studio album to accompany your old epic poem but also awesome)

I'm all for someone at least trying to do something different with their lyrics

Album starts to lose me after about 2/3 so I'm also inclining towards 3.5

This is her tribute to...

I saw the same thing, so I can only conclude that my brain has been fooked by two decades of (fluctuating) Pokémon exposure

It helps to have also read Orlam but it isn't a necessity to enjoy this. Brilliant album.

Interesting to see Autumn Term so high. Easily my weakest track the backing vocals to Polly make it almost unlistenable. Everything else about the song is great - but that screechy forced male falsetto thing is definitely grating to my ears.
