Only Son of the Ladiesman is fantastic.

I really liked the country feel on some of the songs on here, hopefully that'll turn up again on his next LP.

This LP was awesome, though I rarely return to it now that we have Honeybear. FJM has said the next album (which he has already written) is going to be more in the vein of "Holy Shit", which sounds awesome. The honky tonk tracks here are obviously great, but they're just not what I want from him at this point.

Still in my infantry as a Father John Misty fanatic, I have to say I still prefer I Love You, Honeybear but this album is a fantastic little ride. Definitely more loosey-goosey than his next, but still enough carnival alt-country mixed with heavyweight balladry to make him, in two albums under this moniker, a serious front-runner in this genre

Finally checking this. I'm Writing a Novel is really good.

One of my faves.
This is definitely inferior to ILYH though I haven't revisited this in a long time.
"Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" is best probs.

Ladiesman is good too.
I vacillate on whether this is a 3.5 or a 4; really it's a 3.75, right in between.

I should try some of his pre-FJM work one of these days.

This is an ok album but incredibly safe sounding, esp compared to 'Honeybear'

yeh i like the country / americana feel on this

The country/americana singer songwriter thing is a saturated style, I mean Jim James could have released something 75% similar to this, or the dude from Band of Horses...whoever you care to name. It's a style I like but the competition is fierce and originality is at a premium.
Whether you personally care for it or not, Tillman released a unique album last time out, one that had a more classic feel that was far harder to place and also developed a less obvious lyrical bent.

whether you like it or not opinions are subjective and i thought the other album was a pretentious bore
unique =/= good

Lift your head from the herd and it's open season on being seen as a pretentious bore, I think he plays up to that a bit too, he's chosen to become 'not everyone's cup of tea' and fair play to him
By definition not everyone will like it

he plays it up a bit yeah but the question is why and also i don't find the whole thing funny or charming

It's more interesting than this album. He's polarised his listeners.
I'm guessing a few hundred people 'loved' this album but i'm guessing most just thought it was pretty good.
Honeybear you'd need to add two zeros to estimate how many people would claim to love that album. I'm sure far more people hate it too, but at least he has a bonafide fanbase now.
