I'm actually taking a History of Religion class and from what I learned Islam is supposed to be a pretty peaceful religion for the most part.

Dunno if it's mods or not. I submitted around 4:10 central time, haven't seen it up. A bit haphazardly written but got the point across.

this will really change how people think about the refugee crisis

True that. Many people in my country (Greece) want the government to close the borders because they are scared

Today as well, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake has triggered a tsunami warning in Japan.

It's pretty silly not to blame religion when an attacker screams god is great in Arabic as he or she massacres civilians, but hey, that's just my opinion.

Also Toondude you are right about Islam. Took a course on it myself and these people are definitely on the fringe, however large the fringe may be these days. Ideologically, it's a twisted version of what is actually written - a lot of it based on hadiths, which are largely tenuously connected anecdotes of what Muhammad allegedly said or did. These kinds of things are ripe for exploitation as justification for extremism.

Just cause the guy said he was Isis doesn't prove it but we'll see.

They'll take credit for anything that improves their brand of terror.

Not to veer the discussion to a debate on the tenants of Islam but I thought it was worth mentioning

as a muslim, everyone in my community and everyone that I know is deeply upset by this
anyone who thinks that these attacks are """religiously""" motivated needs to understand that religion is the most powerful political tool in the world and that these attacks are spearheaded by people attempted to gain power

ElegantElephant you are exactly right - people use religion as a means to con others into radicalism like this. Islam is not alone and cannot exclusively shoulder the blame.

Coming from an agnostic person.

That isn't really true. In contemporary history it is less common but in the past it was certainly the case. The Crusades are the obvious example.
