Death Metal by default is heavy/"brutal". Sounds redundant to me. Tech Death makes sense stylistically when thinking of the range/sound of bands.

this album isn't even that brutal tho. It's far more meticulous than it is brutal, therefore technical makes more sense. Technical seems a stretch tho when you consider truly technical acts

Personally, I use the genre/label as a way to find similar music and albums
If I love Suffocation and I would like to explore bands that sound similar, then I can search for brutal death metal or slam death metal

haha I GUESS but brutal, to me, makes me think of bands like Defeated Sanity, Brodequin, Disgorge, Disentomb...
oh yeah and that Carnage debut album which predates Pierced by FIVE YEARS. That's gotta be the most brutal album released at the time
Pierced gets pretty brutal but what makes it so good is that it's not incessant brutality. There's ample melody and 'calm' (for death metal) bridges that build up the excitement for the coming tide of brutal riffs.
