It's amazing, as good as VooDoo... Though the religious themes irritate me. It's 2014 and it seems so out of place... Regardless of your beliefs; a scientologist, muslim, jew etc. are going to be turned off by this the same way any athiest like myself would be.

Despite this, this album is incredible, and very relevant. In no way does this aspect detract from the music quality, this may just very well be a 5. My favourite Nick Cave album is the Good Son, so I can forgive Black Messiah. Though it's just a bit dissapointing.

LordePoets: A religious debate shouldn't take place in a music forum the same way religion shouldn't have a place on an album. It limits the demographic.

The fact it's there gives us a right to talk about it. Don't hinder my freedom of speech, it's an opinion. Though I completely understand t's soul music and it fits in, and I think the religion aspect compliments it well.

Living in the southern hemisphere, it's hard to find albums being released suitable for the opposite season it was intended for... Having Benji in Summer last year and something like They Want My Soul in Winter sucked, as I usually have to come back to the album in 6 months to enjoy it more. This definately works for all seasons.

LordePots please say something relevant to the discussion instead of insulting me, or don't say anything at all. We get it, you don't agree my my thoughts, I don't need your blatant pessimistic comments.

"religion shouldn't have a place on an album"
-... why not? should religion have no place in other art forms as well? art is for expression, and many artists have spiritual beliefs. should foreign artists all sing in english so as to broaden their demographic?

Johnnyonspot that's exactly why I keep mentioning I like the album. D'angelo has expressed himself beautifully in this album, and his musical composition and production os pitch perfect.

This isn't my album, it doesn't have to correspond with my thoughts and beliefs. But why is half of Sputnik telling me I'm wrong because I think one aspect of tje album is flawed?

and we dont need your wax-philosophic anti-religious closed minded B.S. commentary. You know what else limits demograph? literally subscribing to ANY genre standard. Should a band not play metal because not everyone likes metal? Not all music is built to appease as many people as humanly possible. You know some of these guys have something called artistic integrity and want to sing about whatever they are passionate about. if that happens to be god that inspires someone to make an album of this calibre of greatness then who are you to say religion doesn't have a place in music? or that people who believe in god or whatever else gives them some simple sense of comfort need to 'wake the fuck up'? keep that shit to yourself. its 2014, learn some tolerance. i was raised catholic too and i don't buy into any religion but i dont let it make me go around judging and undermining the success of music, this could be scientology-soul for all i care it would still be great as long as he still had the same passion to pour into it

i got you b
you seem nice enough so i'll help you out real quick

It's 2014 and it seems so out of place

Christian music doesn't make Christianity any better, it just makes music worse.

A religious debate shouldn't take place in a music forum the same way religion shouldn't have a place on an album. It limits the demographic.

don't say those things

other than that i get you although i aint feelin it god bless fam

How the hell am I closed minded? What the fuck? Also, How many times do I have to say I like this album? I am not ripping on it.

What's with the lame metal anology? Totally irrelevant.

Regardless of anyone's beliefs, it's still a valid criticism. You need to grow up LordePots; just because the RELIGIOUS ASPECT doesn't bother you, it does to me. I'm not wrong or ignorant because of it. Education is becoming more apparent, and religious rates are declining. Hopefully religion will be void from music in future generations. It sparks controversy that can be easily avoided. Regardless of anyone's beliefs, it shouldn't be preached to anyone anymore. People need to learn to think for themselves, and not just accept a wrong answer because they've been indoctrinated. Religion is just a nation-wide cult.

Now if this was made by a church intended for christians... Then it would be a totally different story. The same way metal is made for metalheads. This is intended for avid music listeners, not christians.

the album is the artist's expression of their own individuality

it doesn't have to adhere to your own arrogant beliefs

Explain why I'm closed minded. I don't agree to YOUR opinion so therefore I'm closed minded?
