when the wank becomes too damn high, jeez
|
| |
never heard a fretless bass guitar complain before
I tricked myself into thinking this'd be fun and dissonant reading everyone's NOTES NOTES NOTES comments but it's actually not fun at all and past the virtuosity it's tediously conventional

How anyone can describe something like this as conventional is beyond me, but there you go

By ignoring the virtuosity clearly.

pretty much cant enjoy tech death across the board but this is an exception

"How anyone can describe something like this as conventional is beyond me"
By listening to Spawn of Possession first

I'm a few tracks in and for the most part it's...fine. I need to liosten to Dasein again but I remember that one being a little more creative with the writing, this doesn't feel all that notable so far aside from the little funk/groove segments they're throwing in and I'm not really sure I'm enjoying them

I don't know one way or the other 'bout conventional but it's fucking tedious for sure
The couple times they wank on acoustics instead are pretty fucking gnarly but soon as they plug back in it's just 10 more minutes up and down the scales even if they're uNcOnVeNtIoNaL scales
Archspire figured out you cap this shit around 30 mins.

Yeah should prob give up checking tech death
Get a lil hopeful everytime the next big thing comes around people start hyping high and it never clicks
'cept that Relentless Mutation Archspire record for w/e reason
|

I gotta agree this one is not the greatest tho, the flemenco shit rules butI feel like the riffs overall are not that creative and for a 70-minute album that's not good
Never feel bored for a second while jamming Noctamulant or Incurso

I'm very close to giving this album a 4.5. The problem is when an album is just one really long guitar solo, it starts to lack diversity and balance. I need more melody. When comparing this album to bands like Eternity's End, Obscura, or hell, even Archspire, this is very lacking in musical breaks and interludes to let you unpack the onslaught of wankery.
It additionally needs hooks and well-written solos to complement the sheer speed and technicality of the performances. To elaborate, A well-written solo is not identical to a technical solo, even though more technical solos are more difficult to write generally. Obscura is able to pack in a ton of melody and earworms into their incredibly technical composition in a way that First Fragment are just not as experienced at yet making this a somewhat tiring listen to get through in one sitting.
