Oh, god. I can’t believe what I’m about to do. Honestly, Dem Franchize Boyz have to be the most aggravating group I have ever heard. Complete with deliberate misspellings, nearly non-existent snap beats and some of the dumbest lyrics I have ever heard. Dem Franchize Boyz aren’t that different from everyone else, the new wave of Southern Rap almost always has all three of the previously listed qualities, and almost always aggravates me. For that reason I haven’t listened to an entire album by any new Southern Rap artist in my life. That ends now.
While I will do this review as unbiased as possible, I must first get one thing through. The producer of this album should be taken behind some hick’s shed and shot, multiple times. At times the beats are so simple and weak the song becomes unbearable. Unlike any other Hip-Hop album I’ve ever heard there isn’t one track on this album with even a
decent beat. Instead of snare hits you get hand claps or little clicks, which really makes the songs incredibly weak and not very danceable. On top of this I don’t think one song on
On Top of Our Game has a noticeable bass part, making the production sound very hollow. The only source of melody comes from tiny snyth licks played as high up on the keyboard as possible. The only good thing about the production on ‘On Top of Our Game’ is it is a little denser then some of the other Southern Rapper’s beats (i.e. Yung Joc and D4L)
That aside, DFB aren’t that bad of rappers. I’ve heard worse, unlike fellow southerners Lil John and The Ying-Yang Twins, Dem Franchize Boyz actually rap their lyrics instead of kinda screaming them like a dead animal. The four members actually have slightly differing voices, so you can usually tell who’s rapping where they all have that southern drawl though. Now, on to the actual lyrics that DFB rap. Unsurprisingly most of the lyrics are total crap. Based on their lyrics alone Dem Franchize Boyz seems to only think of two things, Bitches and Rims. If you though you were getting an educated substantial Hip-Hop, you though wrong. The geniuses of Dem Franchize Boyz aren’t capable of this but what they are capable of is:

Despite the click-track beats and the incredible eloquence of the lyrics, some songs on
On Top of Our Game aren’t all that bad. Songs like third single (and last quote) Ridin’ Rims are fun tunes, but it’s hard to find much more than that on Dem Franchize Boyz newest release. You won’t find any intelligent songs, despite the intelligence of certain members. But if you’re in the mood to hear a bunch of black guys rapping about their bitches and their cars over a metronome and a keyboard line then pick this up, because it is a little bit better than some of the other Southern Rap albums.
Pros
- Some tracks are fun
- Dem Franchize Boyz, compared to most modern rappers aren’t all that bad.
Cons
- Most aren’t
- Lyrics are beyond stupid and degrading
- Beats are nearly unbearable
- Unoriginal
Best Tracks
My Music- One of the few songs on the album with a solid beat, one of the more fun songs on the album.
Ridin’ Rims - The Longest track and third is catchy tune about, what else but Rims
Lean Wit it Rock Wit it- If you don’t like the horribly overplayed single, you won’t like the rest of the album. Features on the stupidest dances I’ve ever seen.
I feel generous giving this a: 1.5/5
