0.0 | LifeAsAChipmunk | August 17th 12 | Seemingly self-aware of some of the major faults and criticisms of pop punk, The Banner Year, do their best to showcase their instrumental proficiency and sonic diversity. Many tracks feature a prominent bass section (particularly in the 1st few tracks). The guitars are particularly diverse. Palm mutes aside, many tracks have seemingly metallic riffs, others are vaguely blusey, and even one that is almost gypsy in nature (Hellbent). However, being a compliation of the band's work, there is bound to be problems. First and most obviously, the vocals are very Fallout Boy-esque. The singer seems to be very inexperienced, it is somewhat whiny and very monotonous. It doesn't help that this is 18 tracks long. By the end, you'll very likely be bored of this. In addition, poor songwriting choices show up in spades. From some awkward song structures, to bad choices in instrumental experimentation (see the track Venus), or just overly lengthy/boring/monotonous passages.
