Review Summary: A timeless recording of 21st century jazz
Kyle might Clint Eastwood's oldest son, but there is no way that he is obscured by his father when it comes to jazz. Now 50, Kyle is just a vibrant as was when he released Now in the late 90s and he is still hitting the notes.
Kyle is a long-standing resident of Paris, and this album was recorded in September 2012 at one of France’s finest studios, La Buissonne, near Avignon. The line-up on the recording is as follows: saxophonist Graeme Blevins, trumpeter Quentin Collins, pianist Andrew McCormack and drummer Martyn Kaine. The new Kyle Eastwood band no longer has this line up and in fact the only member of this band that still remains part of the quintet is Andrew McCormack.
There are a total of eleven tracks on the album all of which were composed of various members of that line-up but it is Kyle that dominates the composer credits. The sound is very tight and structured, which is only to be expected, all the musician are talented virtuosos on their instruments including Kyle himself, who will no doubt be credited someday as being part of that illustrious group of bassists that include Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius.
The production musicianship and composition are all outstanding. If I were to say something slightly negative about the album it would be that the cover picture is rather uninspiring and does not convey the true excitement of the album, but hell this is Kyle Eastwood!
