Review Summary: Interest slipping.
How do you rate musical experiments? How can you be objective about this? And why do I feel like I repeat myself too often in these reviews?
Every time Andrew puts out an EP, it's mostly a guessing game which kind of electronic music he will tackle this time. Aside from the EP Love Songs, every single one of his EPs was a more or less successful foray into electronic niche-genres. And following this line of tradition, Supremacy is a small package of experimental IDM, Wonky and Glitch-music that is barely scratching the fifteen minute mark.
First thing worth noting is, that this EP starts off with December, a beautiful piece of layered electronica and a great atmosphere, which is completely misleading in the sense that this project could be uplifting. No, because starting with the second song, Ventricles, we hear what this EP will really be about
: Highly precise and glitchy drum-rhythms with weird and dark sounds put on top of them. Or, as I like to call them, pure experiments.
And this is practically where this thing fails. While yes, the experiments made on here are certainly interesting to listen to, these songs, except for December, have virtually no replaying value. No matter how well produced this all is, everything on here fails to have a point. Experimenting solely for the sake of experimenting. Where artists like the often-mentioned Aphex Twin or Venetian Snares use their experimentation to go for certain innovation, building upon other ideas, Andrew uses this EP to do, well, nothing in particular. It's all a bit samey-sounding as well.
But then comes along the beast of the last song, which actually manages to create some interesting sounds and have an impressive build-up, which follows the title of the song pretty well.
And in the end, this is a very short EP with two standout-tracks and three almost failed tries to create something new. I can't really say that this is either worth your time or worth your interest, but if you are a completionist like me, you can certainly say that you listened to it. And have found two good songs.
Not that you would really want to, though.
