Review Summary: A good first album by an upcoming Canadian band.
Jonas is a band out of Montreal and is composed of only two members, Jonas Tomalty (Lead singer, and composer) and Corey Diabo (Lead guitar and co-writer). Jonas released their first album, entitled Jonas, in September 2004. The album was a big success and featured songs such as a remake of Stevie Nicks' Edge of Seventeen and other hits like Daddy, and Burning the House Down.
Daddy (2:58)
This is a great opening song to the album. This song includes an amazing guitar riff and features Jonas' vocals at his best. This is probably one of the best songs on the album on the album and also includes an incredible guitar solo.
Coming Back Again (3:26)
This is also one of the better songs on the album, which includes a catchy guitar line and also some very catchy and interesting vocals.
Like A River (6:02)
Unlike most songs on the album, Like a River is long at 6 minutes, but is still very good. This is a slower song compared to most of the fast paced, hard rock songs on the rest of the album. The music is very nice and soft, with the addition of a horn section, and Jonas' vocals are very well written.
Burning the House Down (3:34)
Burning the House Down is a very catchy song that makes you tap your foot and sing the melody and chorus over and over again. This song projects Jonas voice that is quite amazing and also a few guitar solos by Corey.
Show Me (3:38)
This song is also a slower paced song, very similar to Like A River and When the Rain Stops. In this song, Jonas and Corey do a very good job at describing a story through music. This song is probably one of the best on the album.
Fascination (3:02)
A good follow-up of Show Me, as it is more hard rock and fast paced, but this is not one of the best songs on the album. The song describes a guys fascination of cars, and has some interesting solos and verses, but a weaker chorus, which almost ruins the rest of the song.
Something Beautiful (3:51)
This song starts off with Jonas singing with no music, this sounds amazing, but once the music starts, the vocals don’t seem to fit in anymore. Probably not the best song on the album.
By The Bed (4:15)
The song features an acoustic guitar with sounds really good. The lyrics seem to fit in perfectly with the music, and the chorus features amazing female vocals, which makes Jonas’ voice sound even better. This song sounds like it could be a good song in a movie or television show.
Same Ol’g (3:19)
This song starts off with a sweet guitar riff by Corey, but the song itself is not the greatest of the album. The lyrics are well written but the music doesn’t work well with the lyrics and Jonas’ voice.
When the Rain Stops (4:41)
Another slow song one, this one includes very good piano and guitar playing, and also a good vocal performance by Jonas. One of the better songs on the album, this is a good song to lead into the last song of the album.
Edge of Seventeen (4:32)
A remake of Stevie Nicks’ classic, Edge of Seventeen was probably the biggest hit on the album and a great way to finish off the CD. This song shows off Corey’s talent with an amazing guitar riff, and also shows Jonas’ raspy voice at its best.
This album was great for a first album and was a big hit considering it’s his first full length album. The band’s second album, Suite Life, is has also been a huge success for Jonas.
