3.5 great | Insurrection | March 16th 15 | A surprisingly effective fusion of instrumental prog metal with electronic beats over a tastefully synthetic backdrop. Neither style is sacrificed in favor of the other - the electronic tracks are well-rounded and maturely written, and the heavier songs keep the distorted guitars in the forefront while maintaining a sense of both atmospheric continuity and musical unpredictability. It is a tad on the long side pushing the hour-long mark, and the longer tracks rely too much on repetition causing the good ideas to overstay their welcome. But for a debut album, The Ghost Within shows great promise not only for the band itself, but also for progressive music and where it seems to be heading in the near future.
