This is probably my favorite altogether work by VNV. It takes the best from Empires and improves upon it. Lastlight takes what was a good instrumental and a better vocal track and makes it shine, Kingdom (Restoration) is one of my favorite songs ever, Further is an underappreciated classic, Legion benefits enormously from both Janus and Anachron, which lend depth to the genuinely moving lyrics, Saviour needed the lyrics to be finished, and Fragments is a delightfully weird track.rIf we include volume 2, which has the Standing mixes, then Standing is another lyrical masterpiece like Solitary, but much more personal, and all three versions here have their own weight and heft. Radius^2 is underknown and underrated, one of my favorite instrumentals ever by them, if not my favorite.rIt's such a great album that it clarifies Empires' weaknesses, which is a good thing. Empires could have been better, and we know that because we have this all-time classic set.

Remixes, in my opinion, are somewhat unnecessary when it comes to EBM. I believe that when the song is finished, it's finished. Although this is debatable, I can firmly say that VNV Nation's remix to Empires is an absolutely breathtaking remix album by the legends, something where I can say that remixes are suitable. Some songs here feature vocals whereas others feature tweaked melody setups; they are equally amazing in their own right. The biggest highlight on this record is definitely Savior (the vox version aka vocal version); the vocals really drive the emotional factor out the window and deliver a state of euphoria for a hefty part of it. With comforting lyrics, euphoric melodies, and foot stomping rhythms, this remix album is far one of the greatest things I've heard by these men, and really, in music in general.
