3.5 great | Ben STAFF | August 17th 16 | Gifting us more of the same wonderfully upbeat instrumental music, Imperative Drive delivers everything it should have, albeit in not as great a quantity as it probably should have. The sophomore release continues the bands energetic, bright and uplifting instrumental folk with great success. The record sports tighter production and incorporates that band's drummer into the mix as well as adding electric guitar in places and more sound bites, creating a more polished and complete package. Unfortunately however, some of the energy of their debut is lost in the process; particularly the guitar work feels far more restrained than previously seen and the experience feels less (a)live. Furthermore, some of the songs are merely remakes of those found on the debut and are differentiated only minimally from the originals by improvements to the mixing and a few instrumental changes. They feel like fairly unnecessary additions, but will be enjoyable enough for those who heard the original and especially so for those who haven't. In the end the guitar, viola and percussion come together to form a wonderful hidden gem that, whilst admittedly outshone by its predecessor, is certainly worth a listen.
