3.5 great | Alabaster Jones | February 27th 17 | One of the coolest things about Subheim's particular way of going about dark ambient is that it isn't dark in a chilling, unnerving sense (though it can be, it's very rare that he chooses that vibe); it's dark in the sense that it's just shaded deeper than typical ambient, with the constant waxing and waning of the ambient noises and textures acting more like the cycle of the moon rather than waves of fear. It's dark ambient that wishes to entrance, not to disturb. Pairing that with some surprisingly delicate ambient tech/downtempo from Danish collaborator Monolog, and Conviction stands out as a beautifully crafted EP that works as excellent music for the wandering mind. It almost works better if you're not paying full attention to it.
