The Brothers and Sisters EP is extremely short (three songs) and extremely revealing. I thought I would review this to give newcomers some History and early Coldplay to check out. B&S shows how Coldplay have changed (or haven’t) over the years. To clarify how Coldplay started and became what they are today
(Also how they recorded this EP) I will quote the “booklet”
(It’s really just a piece of paper) that comes with the EP.
“The ‘Brothers & Sisters’ EP takes us back to a time when Coldplay happily piled their trade on London’s notorious toilet gig circuit in front of dozens rather than thousands of punters. The fierce panda label stumbled across the band playing at the tiny Camden Falcon in December ’98 and were instantly smitten with the foursome’s blend of disarming showmanship and impeccable tunes. So much so that, like many bands before and many groups since, fierce panda offered to release Coldplay’s debut single.
There followed a splendid five month-long relationship between band and label as the ‘Brothers & Sisters’ EP utterly transformed Coldplay’s career; the likes of Radio One and NME swiftly came on board at the start of the following year and by the time the EP was actually released in the UK on March 29th 1999 the media, radio and major label A&R interest had become, frankly, hysterical. The toilet gig circuit was about to become history.”
Well that kind of sums everything up, since there’s only three songs I’ll review the songs individually.
brothers & sisters
“Brothers and Sisters unite it’s the time of your lives”. Is how this revolving upbeat song begins. The song showcases Chris Martin’s vocals and songwriting ability
(you either like it or you don’t). This is just classic Coldplay at it’s best. Awesome song.

easy to please
This one is a little more abstract, it almost seems detached, and not in sync with the other two songs. This song kind of makes me tired for some reason though. This is probably the weakest song here.

only superstition
Haunting guitar. This is an all out infectious song. The EP does a total 180 and grabs on to you, making you listen. “You say to me it’s only superstition”.

I gave Brothers & Sisters a 4 because it’s better than 3.5 but not by much. I’d recommend this only to someone that is truly a fan of Coldplay, and wants a little piece of their history.
