5.0 classic | Doctuses | July 26th 18 | Wow. What a wild ride this was for me. The Pianos of Beethoven's lifetime were wildly different than our modern grands; all of the ones recorded were either built as replicas or restored from 200 years ago. At first I was put off. The pianos of the 1810s and 1820s basically sound like clavichords or harps even, so the strings are weak and the sonorities fade quickly. This means that slow movements are played significantly quicker than I'm used to. There's something special about knowing that these are the sounds that Beethoven heard, and to my surprise the instrument actually allows you to hear the lines more easily, which tend to get muddied on the bigger pianos. Absolutely beautiful.
