Review Summary: "To never return..."
I was really suprised that My Shameful hasn't been added to this moment so i decided to review one of their finest work to date. This is second album in the bands carrer and it was made when the group still had only one member. Everyone knows what to expect from funeral doom metal album. Fortunately all its elements like slow crushing riffs, vocals and even lyrics are developed nearly to perfection on "...of Dust" and it still avoids most of this genre's cons.
There is a lot of variety between songs and their average length was limited to about 6 minutes while the longest song has 9 minutes. Still, every song has some 'hooks" and interesting parts which arent repeated forever like many other bands in this genre apply in their music. Production is massive and clear so every instrument is well audible. If i had to describe how this album sounds in one statement i would call it a soundtrack to journey to hell
The album kicks off with its title track, which begins to built up for few seconds and then explodes with slow, devastating riff followed by some whispering vocals. The atmosphere it creates in such a short time is shocking. It could bring down even most sunny day to your worst nightmare..and this is only a first minute of the album. Atmosphere is eerie and suicidal all the way. Vocals are somehow unique and vary from chanting to deep low grunts. Most of them are practically illegible without looking to lyrics sheet but lyrics itself are nicely written and probably show the story of a wasted, sinful life which lead a man to his suicide.
"Lost but I have found
Soil that will keep me down
Rest but for eternity
Close my eyes and let me dream"
There are few great melodic leads here and there, just like the one at the end of "One Lost" (most accesible) and in "Your Darkness Shine" (probably the best song here). The only one weak moment is main riff in "And waters will close" which is just to fast and "chuggy" for this kind of music and it doesnt fit well. Drumming is rather standart but it changes tempo from time to time and uses double bass to keep things interesting, nothing spectacular but just decent. There are also keyboard and violin parts that make atmosphere even more dense and suffocating.
Even if you enjoy some doom metal this album can be hard to listen to all the way through. This is really exhausting experience and it leaves no place for such things like hope and happiness. It will suck you in more and more everytime u listen to this and soon you will realize...that there is no way back for you now
Pros:
-atmosphere
-good songwriting for this kind of music (variety)
-unique vocals
-wise use of melody which makes songs more memorable
-good production
Cons:
-rather exhausting experience
-parts of "And Waters Will Close" that sounds little out of place
