4.0 excellent | Shonamac | December 10th 08 | 'Slow motion pictures' is the second album release from UK based solo artist Paul Berry. It's a free download from www.paulberrymusic.co.uk.
Paul combines the synthesizer dominated sound that was prominent in the early 80s with a grittier, almost gothic like production. Depeche and NIN, perhaps? It's a strange mixture but it all works just fine.
There are no dance anthems or floor fillers yet the twisted sounds and words pull you in. 'Kaleidoscope life' takes you through a dark corridor of emotion and packs a fantastic, downbeat hook.
'I will be with you' features an hypnotic, pulsing rhythm and soaring chorus whilst 'Broken' is peppered with eerie synth and fractured guitar work. In complete contrast, 'Forbidden world' is a beautiful dream-like ballad complete with a great vocal.
'Lost and found' takes you somewhat by surprise with its acoustic drums and distorted guitars; a good track (in fact probably the most commercial) but a little out of character with the rest of the tracks.
Paul's album rewards you with repeated listening. It's not an album of commercial, fast tempo, cheap-synth MTV friendly pop but something deeper, darker and crafted. Unsigned but not unloved.
