musically, this album isn't the best. the instrumentation is ok beyond the synths, the synths are annoying, the drumming is just OK imo, and yes, the vocals are truly not very good. rbut, it's still a very touching album. the guitar work is quite nice, though I don't think it will any awards for technicality or raw energy. (check out Friedman's solo stuff, like the Scenes album, if you like the guitar work here.) the production is quite well done and - dare I say - creative, even if I agree it is a little too clean. rI don't really know how to rate it. I love it as an art piece. But it's objectively not very good - in the way we would want an album to be consistent and engrossing (or jarring.) It's the vocals, I think, that are the most off-putting. And, for the record, I think Barrett was a pretty great vocalist. Maybe it's just that he's old, I don't know. rI guess, this is my rating, for me. So I will rate based on my personal valuation. But musically, I would rate it much lower.

i can't tell if i'm more put off by the gratingly clean mix, annoying vocals, godawful synth pads, or just the musical ethos here in general. in any case, i thoroughly disliked that

Pendragon leave behind its recent foray into progressive metal and return to its accessible neo prog roots like a pair of comfortable slippers. Extra credit recognized for additional instrumentation such as violin and saxophone to enrich the record's soundscape texture.
