Review Summary: An old school alternative heavy rock in all its modern glory
What country do you associate with rock music? Of course the country of beer and brutal bearded men - Germany. The country that gave us such monsters of rock as Scorpions, Rammstein, Eisbrecher, Grave Digger and thousands more. The rock scene in Germany is like a sky strewn with myriads of stars - some burn for decades, others burn out brightly within a year, some fly across the sky like a shooting star leaving a trail of fire.
And Buridan’s Bridge can be associated with a comet - sneaking up unnoticed, they broke out from the dark depths and lit up the sky with a wildest rock with thick guitar sound and raw power of thundering drums. And I really like the deep voice of the vocalist (somehow reminds the frontman of Oomph! but yet more melodic) is perfectly woven into the melody.
Their EP “Diafora” consists of three songs and the first one was born to be a hit. “Nocturnal” is a composition with a very tenacious and soulful verse part and a truly hypnotic although extremely simple chorus which will stick in your head for a couple of weeks at least. Some people could say that the track is very simple. Yes, you won't find samples with farting penguins and a 19th century organ here, but simplicity is brought to perfection here. Just guitars plus just drums and plus just vocals equals excellence. German perfectionism in all its glory. Similar to Reinheitsgebot law for a good beer. Only three main ingredients and no bull***. Oh, wait, there is also a cello there, to make this men choir moment even more brutally heart piercing.
Other two songs are of the same quality but different in character. “Anderson Council” meets you with explosive guitar riffs and a blasting chorus. Sound becomes heavier, but it is balanced by melodic losses. And on the contrary “Diafora” is a rock ballad that would remind you of a song from Scorpions repertoire - it’s very gentle and melodious (as soft as a rock ballad could be).
What could I say to sum up all written above? Buridan’s Bridge is a diverse rock band that is able keep the magnificent legacy of its ancestors and blend it in a modern approach to their sound (eg Brand New, 1000mods, Dead Rituals, The Menzingers, Despite Everything) and is definitely a band you need to keep your eyes on and ears for. And they prove that even harsh bearded men have a gentle soul and a delicate taste.
