Review Summary: A promising EP from a promising new band.
Storm The Bay is an alternative/pop-punk band from Rochester, New York. They have been building up a respectable fan base since their conception in 2008. They describe themselves as ''Just five dudes with a DIY mentality''. Having no label, the 5 members have been plying their trade playing shows all over the United States.
Their 2nd EP combines a fantastic clean singer with some hardcore screams from one of the guitarists.
''Hit The Ground Running'' is a fitting opener through it's introduction of a very good vocalist who is able to hit some high notes. The guitars maintain a nice riff to accompany the vocals.
Next up is ''Tell Dan K I'm Looking For Him'' a great opening introduces us into a fast drum beat and a respectable riff. Towards the back end of the song we hear a very good guitar solo.
''Drive Fast, Take Chances'' starts with a drum beat with more very good vocals. The vocalist has a very good tone to his voice. ''Heavy Deuces'' is the album standout a great guitar riff backed up by a nice drum beat is the perfect back drop to the singer who begins with;
''And i'm afraid to say i'm over good times, but are the good times over?.
The lyrics are well written and we are thrust then into some nice hardcore screams ''Who knows the road ahead, which way am l going''?
''My Down Stairs Mix Up'' is by no means a bad song, but cannot back up the great ''Heavy Deuces'' that came before it. It does have a nice little guitar solo, but is mostly forgettable.
The unusually titled ''Yeah l Like Dogs, But I Like Caravans Better'' is another song that fades to the background. There are some great vocals, but a very disappointing aspect of this is it's generic and boring breakdown that drags down the song.
Finisher ''For What It's Worth'' is the vocalists best performance on the EP. A ''Whoa Whoa Whoa'' starts it off and the vocalist reaches an amazing high. ''Driving down the same old road, you know it's how it goes'' Uninspiring lyrics do drag it down a little bit, but is a good ending to a good EP. The vocalist is without a doubt the standout of this band, and he allows them to be just above average.
Some may feel these guys are inconsistent, but that is a trait of many young bands. l can definitely see them progressing lyrically and musically on their next effort.
All in all, this band is promising, a full-length is expected sometime soon, that will be the best album to judge, and fans will hope to hear some progression.
