Review Summary: This is one of the best EPs i have heard, and unlike many, there isnt any of the songs that are a let down.

The Fratellis

Creepin' up the Backstairs EP

This may be a short review as it is only a three track EP but i definately think it is worth reviewing.

The Fratellis are a three piece band from Glasgow, Scotland. In the short time they have been formed they have had an outstanding career. They have recently signed to Island records and have been touring the UK. They will be soon making a full-length album and by comparison to their EP it is going to be fantastic.

The Fratellis consist of:

Jon Fratelli (vocals/guitar)
Mince Fratelli (drums)
Barry Fratelli (bass)

Track-by-Track review

1. Creepin' up the Backstairs (3:14)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first song i heard when i was first introduced to The Fratellis. At first i thought it was like all other british Indie bands but as it got into the song i was hooked. It starts off with a laugh then into a contagious foot tapping drum beat. The guitar riff comes in quite early and you'll find yourself nodding away very quickly. I was blown away by how much the music could change if you make the guitar louder, drums fuller and introduce a bass. The verse is smart as well as catchy with lyrics such as "I hear you've got a brand new name selling E's in the dark but its nothing to shout about". It may sound stupid to anyone who hasnt heard it but i couldnt get these lyrics out of my head for days. The bridge arrived after what felt like too short a verse, the whole band come together to make this song get better and better... the brigde itself could be a chorus and i would of liked this song just as much. But after hearing the chorus im delighted that they didnt. In the chorus, returns the catchy guitar riff and the entire all join in to sing what they have created. Another short verse with pretty much the same perks as the 1st verse, another bridge and here comes our old friend the chorus... afterwards a adrenaline fueled scream introduces a key change. After one more bridge and a final chorus a great start to the album is over. Excellent but not perfect 4/5

2. Stacie-Anne (3:22)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like Creepin' up the Backstairs this song also starts off with a catchy drum beat which really gets you pumped and ready for another song. These two songs are based on the same foundations, drums then the guitar comes in then is the bass to make the structure complete. Anyway as the guitar comes in you know you are in for another treat. Catchy lyrics throughout carried on with the bass-line. The Chorus is adequate but in my opinion it doesnt live up to the high standards set by Creepin' up the Backstairs and the verse of this. For some reason every time i hear the "ohoooohooo" part in the chorus it reminds me of the Mad Capsule Markets. It doesnt sound much like them but thats just an odd link that i make. After calming down there is one final heavy push to glory. Let down a little by the chorus but because it is awesome all round it is acceptable. 4/5

3. The Gutterati (2:29)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definately the most punk song on this EP and by far my favourite. It is a great song to finish it off. The Cherry on the Cake if you will. Not sure where to go from here. The Fratellis are most famous for their catchy riffs and this wont dissapoint Fratellis fans. The main guitar theme is one that was stuck in my head for god-knows how long. It may get a bit repetitive to some people but in my opinion the repeats just mean more of hearing it again. Which in my opinion is a good thing. 5/5

I'm sorry, this is not a very good review. Especially the last track description, it seems like you did your best to unjustify your rating. Also, you don't really need to tell us that you think this is worth reviewing, since you reviewed it.

Good job on calling a three track EP a classic.

By that, of course, Eliminator means to describe the tracks with words that are a little more descriptive than "cool" or "adequate."

Also, expand on things. You say the lyrics in the second song are catchy. Maybe you could put some of the lyrics in there, just to prove your point. This Message Edited On 06.16.06

umm, I have heard the single and there's no way this EP can justify a 'classic' rating. It's not that I have any particular distaste for it, but to justify such a high rating, the songs need to be revolutionary, thought provoking or something a little more than a catchy punk song.

It's not a bad review at all. I think Stacie-anne and Creeping up the backstairs are better than half their debut CD. The only issues with the review is the rating you gave it, and the description of the last track.

It's a nicely typed review with little spelling/grammar issues, and I agree with what you wrote. Just bring the ratings down!
