Alexz Johnson is a singer, song writer, and actress. While she writes intimate, down-to-earth lyrics, they’re delivered with a larger-than-life, crystalline voice. Although a relative unknown like many other struggling artists on the streets of her current hometown of New York City, she’s actually an entertainment veteran with fifteen years in the industry and a Gemini Award under her belt. Eight years ago she landed the lead role on Instant Star, a hit Canadian TV show which gave her a platform for her music. Alexz and her brother Brendan wrote the celebrated pop songs that her character, Jude Harrison, sang on the show. After the series ended, Johnson garnered two major label deals working with the likes of Greg Wells, Paul Buckmaster, Toby Gad and Bleu. Due to many internal conflicts and heads of labels being switched, both albums were shelved leaving Johnson with all of her hard work taken away from her. Determined to continue through, Alexz went back to the studio to work with her brother on her debut Voodoo. Through grants from Factor and inDiscover, Alexz and Brendan released the album in 2010 finally making herself an official artist. While performing at a show, she caught the eye of Nelly Furtado and Demo Castellon, with Castellon offering to remix Voodoo and help push the album out into mainstream. This led to the release of Reloaded, a collection of remixes by The Demolition Crew, released in 2011. Now, Johnson is on her own. She recently moved to New York and is independently releasing her forthcoming EP titled Skipping Stone, a collection of 5 songs, showcasing her growth as an artist. The new EP puts Johnson's music into a new direction giving her a more stripped down folk sound, just herself and her guitar. Determined to share her music with no money, she enlisted the help of some friends in the industry to release what she considers something special. Skipping Stone showcases a young woman with a strong voice ready to bare it all. « hide
