Arachnid formed in 1989 when Paul Nicholls and Roger Decarlo decided to join forces for a brutal new project. Paul’s project, Distortion Course with the late Dave “Death” Bjorklund, had recently called it quits, so the time was ripe for a new direction. Arachnid formed in 1989 when Paul Nicholls and Roger Decarlo decided to join forces for a brutal new project. Paul’s project, Distortion Course with the late Dave “Death” Bjorklund, had recently called it quits, so the time was ripe for a new direction. Paul had been “woodshedding” a handful of complete songs he had written is a back bedroom and wanted to unleash these brutal new tunes to the unsuspecting public. Roger had been doing his Cruella project for some time and thought he’d help out with the new project. Roger knew drummer Charlie Nelson from a previous Cruella lineup, and thought he could handle the intense drumming needed to push the music. Next, bassist Bill Brewer was brought in from Bad Habit fame. Billy had been playing guitar but wanted to be a part of the project and owned a bass rig. So the final lineup came together with Paul handling Lead vocal duties and lead guitar, Roger on lead guitar and backing vocals, Bill Brewer on bass and Charlie Nelson on drums. Many shows were played with the likes of brutal acts; Phobia, Dead Conspiracy, Savior, Chemical Annihilation, Demise, Alien Death Church, Bodybag and Antagonist, Nihilism to name a few. Gaining momentum, Arachnid opened for national acts; Forced Entry, Annihilator, and Defiance. Next on the agenda was a studio session scheduled at Dogfish Sound in Newberg, Oregon with engineer, Drew Canulette in late 1991. The result was an 8 song aural assault that begged to be released. With crowd favorites, “Near Darkness” and “Beyond Torment”, the tape was making a stir in tape trading circles and fanzines worldwide.
