Boddika is the new solo project from Al Bleek who, together with Kid Drama as Instra:mental, has earned a reputation in recent years as one of the most innovative producers in underground dance music. Breathing new life into the dusty old hardware of days gone by, Boddika’s sound take you back to a time when the distinctions between electro, house and techno music were far less apparent. His tracks are built for the dancefloor first, combining a fresh take on the ancient rhythms of classic Roland drum machines with vintage synths and modern production techniques, including Techno Vybz. DJ support from diverse selectors like Skream, Loefah, Benji B and Mary Anne Hobbs has seen Boddika’s music mixed with dubstep, techno, electro and juke, lifting live sets with a raw energy lacking in many of today’s overproduced and computerised sounds. Look out for forthcoming releases on Naked Lunch (‘Boddika’s House b/w Syn Cron’) and Swamp81 (‘Rubba b/w 2727’ and ‘Electron’) as Boddika kicks things off in 2010.
“Cool” uncles have always gotten kids into all kinds of wonderful mischief, but 22-year-old Peter O’Grady from London , better known as Joy Orbison, was especially blessed—he credits uncle Ray Keith with introducing him to jungle and U.K. garage long before he could ever hit the clubs. At the age of 13 he took up DJing and eventually moved into production, beginning with Fruity Loops-crafted 8-bar grime loops before shifting into headier territory that combined his love of house, disco, and dubstep with the atmospheric fuzz of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Josef K, and The Beach Boys. His debut single “Hyph Mngo” has become the forward-thinking dubstep/2-step tune of 2009, and was followed by “BRKL CLLN” on O’Grady’s own Doldrums label, which he runs in tandem with partner Impey.
David Kennedy’s work as Ramadanman and Pearson Sound has been a positive scourge on the airwaves this past year. His current deviation from any kind of conventional ‘dubstep’ template hasn’t come as a shock for anyone who’s been following his career from the start - he’s always had a particular slant and a percussively textured style all of his own that’s often layered with thick and potent bass frequencies and synth washes - but it seems like with recent material like ‘Work Them’ (released on Loefah’s Swamp81 imprint) Kennedy is simply toying with the world’s expectations of him.
As a key component behind some of the most daring dancefloor music released in the last year, both as a producer and as a label owner – Kennedy co-runs the Hessle Audio imprint, alongside Pangaea and Ben UFO - he’s travelled the world numerous times over releasing music by key producers like Joe, Elgato and James Blake as he’s done it. Scoring his label a well respected residency at London club, fabric and more recently, starting his own vinyl only night called Acetate in Leeds, his knack for working over a dancefloor shows no sign of waning. Finding the perfect space between bass bin and monitor he’s constantly innovating, refusing to sit still and feeding off all kinds of temperate influences – from old house to Chicago juke music - the end of 2010 and into 2011 sees him hording an array of productions that are absolutely battering soundsystems, radio shows and eardrums alike. « hide |
