Born to a Ghanian father and Scottish mother in the latter's homeland in 1963, Helicopter Girl aka Jackie Joyce first took flight as a vocalist with folk
group Ambisonic and adopted her stage name from a song written with the group titled Helicopter Kinda Girl. Her solo debut album How to Steal the
World, released in the summer of 2000, found the singer ditching her precise, folk-inflected vocals for a more raspy, theatrical delivery a la Eartha Kitt.
