Kenickie were an alt/pop rock/punk band from England that first formed in 1994. It would take the group only two years to go major when they signed to EMI in the summer of 1996. Kenickie managed to have some success during 1996 and 1997, and the group's poppy yet snarky sound helped make their 1997 debut album, "At the Club", a modest success as it performed slightly well on the US Billboard charts, although it managed to be a hit in the UK when it reached number 9 on the UK Albums Chart. Kenickie were an alt/pop rock/punk band from England that first formed in 1994. It would take the group only two years to go major when they signed to EMI in the summer of 1996. Kenickie managed to have some success during 1996 and 1997, and the group's poppy yet snarky sound helped make their 1997 debut album, "At the Club", a modest success as it performed slightly well on the US Billboard charts, although it managed to be a hit in the UK when it reached number 9 on the UK Albums Chart. Their next album, 1998's "Get In", was a drastic change in Kenickie's style as it was much more melodic and poppy, and as such, the album performed poorly on the charts, only reaching number 32 on the UK Album Charts and not even breaking the US Billboard charts. The disappointing sales of "Get In" helped convince Kenickie to disband, and the group played their final concert in October of 1998, just two months after the album was released. Drummer Johnny X went on to form his own solo project J Xaverre, and has also collaborated with numerous underground artists like Frankie & the Heartstrings and Spraydog. Frontwoman Lauren Laverne went on to become a widely popular television personality in the UK, and is currently employed by the BBC. She also had done work as a model and an author. Guitarist Marie du Santiago and bassist Emmy-Kate Montrose went on to form the indie rock band Rosita, which only released two singles before disbanding in early 2001. After its short run, Montrose retired from the music scene, while du Santiago would also disappear from the music circuit, but returned in 2010 as a member of the underground indie-folk band The Cornshed Sisters. « hide |
