In 1994 after the release of their highly acclaimed album Focus, and while attempting to record new material the technical/progressive metal group Cynic disbanded. Most of the members at that time formed the short-lived project entitled Portal.Portal marked a radical change to the band's previous music but retained some of the jazz and other fusion aspects found on Focus. Chris Kringel, the band's live bassist was also involved along with Aruna Abrams handling lead vocals and keyboards.Portal never officially released any material but recorded a total of ten demo tracks between 1994 and '95.
