Of course, mask-wearing anonymity alone is worth nothing, but pair it with the sort of experimental techno and house that Rivet has been releasing over the last year and suddenly people take an interest. “I want to have people listen without preconceptions,” says the man himself. “The mask itself is unimportant. Of course, mask-wearing anonymity alone is worth nothing, but pair it with the sort of experimental techno and house that Rivet has been releasing over the last year and suddenly people take an interest. “I want to have people listen without preconceptions,” says the man himself. “The mask itself is unimportant. It's what it does that is key – it moves the focus away from me, onto the music. If there comes a day when it no longer serves this purpose, I will scrap it.” So far it’s working, as punters, the press and label managers alike have all fawned over what they have heard from Rivet, fast making him one of the underground’s most cherished new talents. There have already been EPs on esteemed labels like Kontra-Musik and Skudge’s own eponymous imprint, with raw and rusty techno, jagged industrial house and plenty of organic sounds all making up his discography to date. There’s more to come on the same labels soon, as well as a handful of remixes. Keen to do his own thing and go his own way without working from a formula, Rivet is influenced by anything from Baby D to Liaisons Dangereuses and early Paul Johnson. “I love music that gives energy,” says the man who grew up listening to Bronski Beat and Boytronic before eventually becoming obsessed with jungle and UK hardcore in the 90’s. Naturally, DJing and producing soon followed, and now Rivet states “creation is the most important aspect of my life, I could never live without it.” As such, his DJ sets are wholly creative things crafted using 4 decks (without USB or computer). See Rivet mixing a diverse track selection with ease. He chops, cuts and juggles quickly and efficiently à la American 90s DJs. Rivet likes to challenge himself, change set ups, use different bits of hardware and plenty of found sound recordings on a regular basis. And so, though the man behind it all may be faceless, the music he makes is quite the opposite. Rivet surfaced in 2011 with two stand out EPs on Frozen Border sub label Naked Index. A remix for Bristolian starlet Kowton on Danish imprint Teal Recordings and his “Amid The Roar” EP for the excellent Kontra-Musik, complete with a Marcel Fengler Redefinition soon followed. Rivet’s rugged and distinguished take on techno has already garnered support from Martyn, Pariah, Blawan, Skudge and Scuba who commissioned “Slant” and “Running” for his celebrated DJ Kicks compilation. In a succinct career Rivet has showcased his ability to produce bruising slabs of club techno infused with such fervour that he is almost peerless. « hide
