Originating in California, Smegma moved to Portland, Oregon to find a better environment for their music production in the early-mid 80's. Portland seemed like the most logical place for them to reside, due to their odd personalities and music style. Smegma found themselves to fit in with the punk scene of the 80's, and were known to have punks at their shows and vice versa. Smegma became locally known for 'The Smegma House', their living space in Portland, which accommodated not only the 6 piece noise band, but also punks and locals who followed their music. Smegma is still active today, playing small shows and making music every now and again.
