Their / They're / There is a math rock outfit from Chicago, Illinois, consisting of three important musical figures in the city's indie rock scene. Evan Weiss (vocals/bass) has been a part of a sizable number of bands including Stay Ahead of the Weather and Pet Symmetry, but is best known for his solo project Into It. Over It. which has been recognized as a vital act to the growing "emo revival". Weiss expressed interest in forming the group in order to play bass again, as he did in his early bands including The Progress. Matthew Frank (guitar/backing vocals) played in the math rock group Loose Lips Sink Ships, experimenting heavily within the confines of the guitar-oriented group to develop his own trademark style of noodly melodies. Since the breakup of Loose Lips, he formed Lifted Bells alongside members of Braid and Stay Ahead of the Weather, joined The Para-medics, and currently runs the indie label Naked Ally Records. Mike Kinsella (drums) has been a veteran of emo music from as early as his membership at the age of twelve in the pioneering indie/emo band Cap'n Jazz, formed in 1989. Kinsella further developed the emo sound years later as the frontman of American Football--one of the earliest "twinklecore" groups--and now performs acoustic music in his solo project Owen.
Formed in January of 2011, the group began from the friendship of Frank and Weiss who then recruited Kinsella as the drummer of their new band, which first surfaced mysteriously on Facebook without explanation in 2012. Upon revealing their lineup, the "supergroup" (a label which Weiss rejects) released their first two EPs in 2013 and toured regularly across the US in addition to a brief stint in Japan. « hide |
