In September 2008, Logan Smith (vocals/rhythm guitar) began to write folk/viking metal until the
name "Varangian Guard". His ambitions as a solo artist only lasted about 2-3 months before
enlisting Kellan Hlscher (drums) to record drums for the songs. It wasn't until December of 2008
that Warseid (still going under Varangian Guard at the time) became a viable outfit when Kyle

Cushman (bass) joined. For the next 3 months they wrote as a three-man band.
Warseid again went through some changes in February 2009 when long time friend Brandon Salaway
(lead guitar) came into fray as well as deciding to change the name from "Varangian Guard" to
"Warseid".
For the next few months the four wrote 4 new songs and produced the Winter Legions Demo in May
2009. Going into the summer, they had no intentions of playing shows, but only of writing new
material. Fortunately for them, they would soon get a lot of help and an extra layer of sound added
on.
In July 2009, Joe Meland (keyboard/accordion/vocals) of Aurora joined Warseid. By this time,
Warseid had added 2 more songs to their repertoire, but now, with the addition of keyboards, added a
new dimension of melody and sound that Warseid could not produce before.
As the seasons go, summer came and went and both Kellan and Kyle went off to universities. One
would think that this is the end of most highschool bands, but not for Warseid: they were only getting
started. In November 2009, Warseid played their first show opening for Lamb of God, GWAR, and
Job For A Cowboy at the Rave.
But since practice only happened on the weekends because of school, progress slowed to a grinding
pace. It would be several months, all the way until February of 2010 in fact, before Warseid would hit
the local scene again. And when they did, it would be explosive for both them and for the scene
itself.
When they finally had the time to play again, Warseid, through luck and good timing, had the fortune
of sharing the main stage with Epica, Threat Signal, and Blackguard. Warseid, it seemed, had started
to emerge as a band to watch in the burgeoning folk metal scene in the States.
Now in April 2010 Warseid has produced a new, and much higher quality, demo containing 2 of their
most hard hitting songs and a third and more dynamic song.
Warseid has then played a few shows in the Madison area, trying their hardest to work around school
for their music. When the sun reaches its apex and the lands are ripe for pillage, Warseid will raid
every venue they get to play at. « hide |
