05.19.12 | Thought this was going to be a reference to BTBAM when I first saw the name of the list. As far as the colors go I think you have the colors mixed up. Jane Doe? Brown? I can see that. Thrice Major/Minor? I feel the color green when I listen to Major/Minor |
BlueW
05.19.12 | yummy, cocteau twins... I have a hard time distinguishing them between blue and pink...

BlueW
05.19.12 | Hmmm yeah masbar you might be on to something there I can def feel a bit of green also yellow in it |
MasBarHigeuoris21
05.19.12 | I would say a feeling of red with wormrot |
liledman
05.19.12 | its spelled colour.
the phenomenon is called synaesthesia. theres actually quite a lot of people who hear notes as colours or chords as particular textures and combinations of colours. ive never had anything close to that kind of reaction, but sometimes certain textures trigger thoughts of colours. |
liledman
05.19.12 | its interesting how much of it is triggered by the album cover also. i think thats an indicator of a good cover. |
BlueW
05.19.12 | ooh cool beans, didn't know this was an exclusive perk |
guitarnater
05.19.12 | Yeah, I love trying to pick out colors to match music. It makes the experience a lot more engaging.
That, or I associate the album cover's color too closely with the music. |
BlueW
05.19.12 | meh, I didn't find that release that great TBH |
Dolving999
05.19.12 | Jane Doe is my almond brown. |
Wolfhorde
05.19.12 | "its spelled colour.
its spelled color..."
It's both. Regardless, colors? Idk, sounds pretty weird unless you have synaesthesia. |
Spare
05.19.12 | it's pretty nearly always triggered by your knowledge of the album cover if you ask me. not necessarily synaesthesia. |
Wolfhorde
05.19.12 | Thinking of colors/association with certain nuances: yes, de facto hearing colors: no. |
Puzzles
05.19.12 | Either you're talking about Synaesthesia or just colour association. Some people (Beethoven for example, the only one I can think of) would have such a close mental bond with sound that he would view music in terms of colour. Not in just a minor way; it would be an intense relationship that would stay consistently intense and have physical implications. That's Synaesthesia - basically experiencing one sense through another. Of course there's simple colour association which is subconscious but nevertheless present. I've found that people tend to associate the predominant colour of the album cover with the album they're listening to (or whatever image they associate the music with). I think that's one of the main reasons why people view albums as being 'dark', often it's not necessarily the music but the album cover (i.e. QOTSA - Lullabies to Paralyze, Arctic Monkeys - Humbug, Tool - Aenima) |
Puzzles
05.19.12 | Oh shit, Spare made my point seconds before I made it, in about 1/10 of the word count! |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.19.12 | Yeah, I kinda get that, but I don't think I have Synthaesthesia
The album cover comment is very true, but here are a few albums that I associate with colours coz of
mainly sound:
Rush - Permanent Waves - Purple
Opeth - Morningrise - Dark green
Alter Bridge - One Day Remains - Yellow/orange
I made a list like this, but with feelings or images instead of colours |
liledman
05.19.12 | yeah whats being spoken of mostly here isnt really synaethesia, i was just bringing it up on topic. i think association happens with most music fans to an extent, whether they spend time thinking about it or not. |
Sirob
05.19.12 | "The Dear Hunter - The Colour Spectrum"
well it would have to be rainbow officially making it the gayest album ever! |

JohnnyoftheWell
05.19.12 | Also, there are some bands that make an effort to connect their artwork with their sound (eg Isis) to enhance the experience, so artwork can be an accurate way to visualize music |
