| Aussie Post-rock Scene
The Australian post-rock scene as I know it. I'm constantly surprised by
the lack of Melbourne bands but it seems they only have indie pop or
avant-garde down there... I'll also be looking to do reviews of all the

A fledgling Sydney band, they're a little closer to the traditional brand of post-

No House
A Sydney trio, these guys are much more on the experimental side of post-rock.
Unfortunately, they do tend to sound a little limited by the small amount of
instruments they have (something I feel needs to be overcome in nearly every
trio). Still worth a listen and pretty good live. | | 8 | | Screens
Banshee EP
A fledgling Brisbane band, their main feature is the amazing voice of their
singer. Operatically trained, she uses her voice mainly as another instrument
and the sheer range she has is outstanding. Time will tell if they can strike the

Wire Empire
Fusing together post-rock and math-rock, these guys' unrelentingly happy
sound will put a smile on nearly anyone's face. It never feels forced either, a
feat I've only heard once before in Jonsi's Go album. The musicianship is pretty
damn amazing, drums, guitar and cello in particular. | | 6 |  | Meniscus
Absence of I
These guys have been around long enough to be an absence on a few of the
other bands here. Their brand of free-flowing and melodic post-rock is
stunningly layered and beautiful. Another extremely strong songwriting team

These guys put the rock back into post-rock. Their cinematic and driving songs
feature a great dynamic between the two lead guitar players, while also having
some of the nicest bass lines I've heard in this genre. The drumming is probably
the weakest part of the band. These guys know their way around a crescendo

In Today Already Walks Tomorrow
The big success story of the Aussie post-rock scene so far, having just finished
European and American tours. These guys are probably the closest to the old-
school of post-rock but have more than enough distinctions to make them
probably part of the next wave of Post-rock 3.0. Some of their songwriting is
just dropdead gorgeous too and their old drummer was the best I've seen live | | 3 |  | Nikko
The Warm Side
Doom-country fused with post-rock. That's about as close as I can get to a
description. Melancholy bar-room ballads so good you can almost smell the spilt
beer and cigerette smoke staining your room as you listen. There's a mean

Twelve Hundred Times
Laura have been around for a while and they've improved with age. Their
newest album continues their style of dark, paranoid and oppressive post-rock
but add brief poetic downbeat lyrics to their apocalyptic soundscapes with
surprisingly great effect. None of that twinkly, conventional old-school stuff

Deaden the Fields
In my opinion, the best post-rock band in Australia. These guys fuse post-rock
and jazz together in an amazing mix of piano virtuosity, unconventional
drumming and extremely accomplished song-writing. Their latest album
cements their style and is a sheer pleasure to listen to. A previous genre
description of theirs was 'industrial cruise-ship jazz' and the best band I've seen

05.28.12 | I went to see a local Adelaide band called Wormwood and they were pretty awesome- Some suave jazzy Tool-esque post rock.
Really awesome stuff, I would recommend them but their recordings aren't nearly as good as live. | MO

@MichaelSnoxall. Definitely give Nikko and Laura a listen, they're not typical of the genre at all. All of the top 7 are really quite different/ non-generic.

Rasputin, I'd have to disagree there. Sure, their newer record has a more continuous theme running through it but with that piano and drumming, they're always going to be jazzy. Things did seem a fair bit more structured than their spastic 'everything at once' style but I prefer it, the way they evolve and build up over the course of the album is sublime. But I can see why some may prefer their earlier stuff. | Sig
