This one went pretty under the radar, but the collaboration/split LP between Year of no Light and ambient act thisquietarmy is one that should not be missed. There's definitely more ambient here than there is YonL's signature post-metal style, but the dark, bleak, crushing atmosphere created by this split makes it a must-have. | | 10 |  | Thou/Kowloon Walled City

The second of this year's Thou splits is a cover album instead of one with original music, with Thou creating a really excellent cover of Soundgarden's "4th of July" and Kowloon Walled City one of Low's "July." Two very little-known bands, Huldra and Dustbloom, put out a split that makes me very excited for both their futures. The former is a post-metal group that I've been particularly attached to ever since hearing their 2011 EP "Signals from the Void," while the latter is some sort of really cool alt metal/post-rock/post-hardcore hybrid. | | 7 |  | Altar of Plagues/Year of no Light

While Year of no Light are pretty true to their excellent long-winded instrumental post-metal form, Altar of Plagues go a bit more out of the box here, with a meandering, 17-minute track that is far more chaotic and far less black metal-y that most of their other stuff. Two grindy hardcore bands bring the fucking pain on this split, with Full of Hell slightly edging out CoK with their hateful, blackened take on the style. | | 5 |  | Junius/Rosetta

The Junius side, although it's not the single best thing they've ever done (that honor goes to the full-length that they also dropped this year), is a decent helping of well-executed, spacey, post-rocky hard rock, while Rosetta put out a brilliant slab of post-metal that makes me that much more excited for whatever they're going to do next. I hear talk of an EP early next year, but we'll just have to wait and see... | | 4 |  | Thou/Hell
Resurrection Bay
sludge metal - This year may have been the least productive year in Thou's existence, with only 2 splits to speak of, but that doesn't mean that any of their usual quality was lost. Thou, as usual, brings the swampy New Orleans sludge hard, while the lesser-known (but still awesome - check out their full-lengths) Hell play a more blackened take on the genre. | | 3 |  | The Mire/Chronos

Two little-known post-metal bands put out the best post-metal split of the year. Songs of Townes Van Zandt
Country/dark folk - The two Neurosis frontman and the guy from Obsessed and Saint Vitus out out a 3-way split cover album of Townes Van Zandt songs. Even though I'm not familiar with the original music, I can tell that the massive power of the three beards resulted in a really awesome split that would be that much better if I listened to the originals. | | 1 |  | Deafheaven/Bosse-de-Nage
Split
Atmospheric black metal/screamo - Bosse-de-Nage are just as good as ever, their drummer giving a particularly awesome performance, while Deafheaven cover a Mogwai song and create what is now one of my all-time favorite covers. This is without a doubt the year's best split. | |

The only reason I put this one out so early is that I didn't really see many opportunities for any new splits to jump up on me in the next month, while I still have a 20+ album surplus of LPs and EPs that I still have yet to listen to before I make the other lists. | TheSpirit
