bakkermaarten007
12.10.12 | "Absolute freak the way he has a ball on a string. "
Yeah exactly. Never seen anyone do that, he never jostles against the ball, it's like he caresses it forward and can still reach his topspeed while doing so. |
bakkermaarten007
12.10.12 | "are you kidding, defenders were way more aggressive back then, every second tackle was a potential leg breaker"
I meant that they were not as muscular and not as organised as they are now. Power training wasn't common back the. The tackles were just a part of the refereeing in these days. |

Falcao rules hard, it's been a long time since a football player of my country really showed that level, anyways James, Cuadrado and more also have a very good level. Is cool than for the first time in decades we have a decent team capable of more things. |

12.10.12 | Blaming Messi for Argentina not winning a World Cup in the past decade is the stupidest thing. They have like a handful of top-tier players right now. Both Uruguay and Brazil are far deeper teams, and that's just staying on the continent.
also, what Davey said, hard.
Messi sets up twice as many goals as he scores as well, he's such a well rounded player. |
InfamousGrouse
12.10.12 | well granted Messi has played in two world cups and only scored one goal, which is unimpressive: hell Thomas Muller at 20 managed to score five in his first. However, as I said, tactical naiveties of Maradona in 2010 cost Argentina against a great team in Germany. Bastian Schweinsteiger had arguably the best game of his career (at least in my eyes, I've been watching him consistently for about five years), marking him out of the match entirely, and their shoddy back four had a bad, bad game. They played the whole tournament as a group of talented individuals and nothing more.
Hell blame Messi all you want, he did have a bad game by his standards. He barely ever has bad games (vs Inter Milan 2010, Chelsea 2012 especially spring to mind) but he is for the most part remarkably consistent and deserves to break the record imo

12.10.12 | it's not a question of luck but the system he plays in definitely complements his playing style. they seem to be built around him moreso now than they were a few years back when they had Eto'o and Henry in the front three. JamieTwort
12.10.12 | "messi may be better, but ronaldo is the most well rounded footballer in the world bar none."

12.10.12 | "messi may be better, but ronaldo is the most well rounded footballer in the world bar none."

SIMBOLIC
12.10.12 | yeh but ronaldo is a better long range striker, better in the air by far (messi may be decent but has nothing on ronaldo in the air), better free kicks (not by too much tho) and stronger. SIMBOLIC
12.10.12 | for me i prefer ronaldo as he is more complete and can carry a team on his back. ive seen a few barcelona games. if xavi and iniesta arent firing, neither is messi from wat ive seen |

overall better and c.ronaldo is one of the best players right now! |
SIMBOLIC
12.10.12 | its close. I mean messi is helped as a striker by having the two best midfielders in the world and fabregas who would be top 10 feeding him gems |
Keyblade
12.10.12 | So he's physically stronger (something Messi can't help especially considering his medical condition growing up) therefore he's a better all round footballer?
Also the claim that he can't perform without Xavi or Iniesta is almost as silly as the 'well can he do it on a rainy Tuesday night in Stoke?' argument. |
JamieTwort
12.10.12 | "ronaldo scored 2 hat tricks in a week this season and has been consitently excellent in the champions league. i havent seen la liga but he's looked good in the CL"

12.10.12 | "everybody has their good days and bad days but that doesn't strip the talent from anybody!" -
True but consistency is a factor that should imo be taken into account when discussing who is the best player in the world. |
Chrisjon89
12.10.12 | I see Ronaldo as better in terms of tricks and stuff, whereas Messi opts for close control. I agree Ronaldo is still stronger in the air but Barcelona aren't really known for their crossing. That's one of their weaknesses - defending in the air against set pieces cos they're a shorter team. And I agree Ronaldo is a better striker of the ball from distance but once again, Barcelona aren't a long range shot type of team.
I think Messi is better overall but not gonna complain cos those are two ridiculously good players. |
mifzal
12.10.12 | "True but consistency is a factor that should imo be taken into account when discussing who is the best player in the world."
it's not that! for most one slip is enough to prove someone's inferiority! |
SIMBOLIC
12.10.12 | @Keyblade well strength is only one of things i mentioned but yeh strength is an important part of being an attacking player.
@chris whether or not barca cross the ball often is irrelevant. ronaldo is still better in the air. sure they've desgined their team to work around messi's strengths which is intelligent, it doesn't mean his shortcomings dont matter |
JamieTwort
12.10.12 | "it's not that! for most one slip is enough to prove someone's inferiority!"
Well yeah sometimes people do react too strongly when a player has a slip up but that's not really what I was getting at, I was talking about consistency as being one of Messi's many assets. |
mifzal
12.10.12 | Ronaldinho>Messi>C.Ronaldo |
Chrisjon89
12.10.12 | I agreed that Ronaldo is stronger in the air. I wouldn't call it a shortcoming of Messi's though. And I think they're both ridiculously consistent.
I hope Athletico push them all the way this season. Falcao is another great player who I unfortunately never get to watch these days since they stopped showing La Liga on ESPN. You'd think someone will be after him for a transfer at the end of the year. |
Dreamflight
12.10.12 | The way I see it Ronaldo is like the perfect player. He pretty much does everything right. Like Mourinho said on some documentary, he's the first to press the oposite team on counter attacks, and his influence on defensive corners is really high. And for a winger to score such ammount of goals is pretty impressive if you ask me.
Messi on the other hand is a natural born talent, and a fucking genious. It's true he is yet to prove his talent on another team, but wtf would he want to leave the best team in the world, while earning millions? he's on the top, unfortunely there's nothing beyond Barça these days. |

12.10.12 | Neymar is great but he's so so so overrated at the moment. People are calling him the next Messi but it's not justified. With the resurgence that domestic football in Brazil is having, they're keeping more of their starts in the country with big contracts. Neymar needs to go to Europe to develop his game, especially if he ever wants to justify these comparisons, but his bosses are doing everything then can to keep him in Sao Paolo. I think that he has a real opportuinity to show the world what he can do in 2014. But anything less than a win will be seen as a disaster, and I think they will fall short. Brazil's performance in the Gold Metal game in London (and specifically, Neymar's) was underwhelming and pathetic. They lost to 2nd-tier soccer nation's B team, and they had all their stars on display.
tldr: he is amazing, but he needs to mature and gain some non-brazillian footballing perspective before we can talk about him being top-tier. |
