| Song Of The Month: February
Awarded to the best song I hear each month. The song can be old or
something that has just been released ? the only criteria is that it must be
a song I had not heard before the 1st day of said month. | 1 | Michael Gira Blind
The winner for February goes to Michael Gira?s excellent folk ballad ?Blind.? Well-
known in the underground for his distinct vocals and songwriting for influential rock
band Swans, Gira?s solo efforts have gone largely unnoticed. This is a real shame
because some of Gira?s best songs have appeared on projects outside of Swans and
?Blind? is perhaps the best of the lot. Released in 1995 it appeared as the final
track on Drainland, an album with lots of potential that was never fully realised
outside of a few tracks. ?Blind? is, however, Gira at his absolute best and you?ll be
hard-pressed to find many Swans? songs from their folk-era that match up to the
beauty and anguish displayed here. The music is bittersweet, never touching the
absolute despair of the lyrics (?And if you could step inside me you?d feel what
hatred brings / And if you saw with my eyes you?d see what self-deception means?)
and seems to share a spiritual bond with God Damn the Sun, the closer from Swans?
1989 release. Brutally honest and unnerving, with just a dash of hopefulness,
Michael Gira?s ?Blind? is my song of the month for February 2013. | 2 | Circle Takes the Square North Star, Inverted
