| Summer Slaughter Experience
Yes, well, the lineup might have sucked this year, but Summer Slaughter managed to be pretty awesome still. It also helps that I got tickets for me and my girl for the low, low price of FREE! Because honestly, I wouldn't have paid $37 for that shit. | 1 | | Thy Art is Murder Hate
We actually came late with the intent of missing TAiM; little did we know there were local openers. As we sat outside, finishing off our pinnacle white-cake-vodka-and-orange-fanta (it tastes like fucking orange dreamsicle, YUM!) I heard chugga chuggas and assumed it was the Aussies. Well, it wasn't, and we ended up catching their whole set. They were surprisingly good, actually. 3/5 | 2 | | Rings of Saturn Dingir
These guys were better last year. They didn't have a bassist, and all their guitar parts are harmonized, so basically you had this lonely blast-beat constantly in the background doing all it could to hold up the rhythm. Oddly enough they were on my list of bands I was there to see, and they ended up doing the worst. 1.5/5 | 3 | | Aeon Aeons Black
Honestly I had only listened to one song by these guys, several months ago, and dismissed it as boring, basic brutal death. And, well, they were live too, but it's a lot better live than on record. 3/5 | 4 | | Revocation Existence is Futile
I'm not even a Revocation fan and they were AWESOME. I wish I had more to say, but as I'm typing all this, I'm realizing I was too drunk to give much of a critical view of most of these bands...oh well. 4/5 | 5 | | The Ocean Precambrian
OH MY GOD THE OCEAN KICKED ASS. I wish I could tell you I recognized what songs they played, because other than that one single off of Pelagial, I didn't recognize a one. That tells me that they were mostly old songs, especially since their singer was growling most of the time. They closed their way-too-fucking-short set out with some ultra-sludge number, moving at a pace of like one JUNNNNNNNNN per ten seconds, it was monstrous. 5/5 | 6 | | Cattle Decapitation The Harvest Floor
The only band that really fit the bill, CatDecap slayed. They opened with Defecating Meat and played Lifestalker, Kingdom of Tyrants, Forced Gender Reassignment, Your Disposal, and some old song that they kinda just kicked into midway through the set. I was thrown all over the floor so much that I pretty much never got a view of the band on stage. My girlfriend said she saw Travis Ryan catch a loogy and snort it, so uhh, I'm sad I missed that. 5/5 | 7 | | Norma Jean Redeemer
I planned on sitting out during Norma Jean, but I'm glad I didn't. I'm no fan of theirs but their live set was a lot of fun. Almost as chaotic as, say, the Chariot, and still fan-favorites despite their inactivity. They played Anthem of the Angry Brides, If You Got it At Five, A Small Spark vs. a Great Forest, two songs off of O God, and closed with Memphis Will Be Laid to Waste. 3.5/5 | 8 | | Periphery Periphery
Well...they have stage presence. But seriously, fuck Periphery. Just like last year, this was the point during Summer Slaughter at which we needed to chug down our flasks. And seriously why the hell do they need so many damn guitarists? 2/5 | 9 | | Animals as Leaders Weightless
We spend most of their set looking for my girlfriend's keys, which she lost in the Norma Jean mob. Managed to find them somehow. And then I got a sick shirt each from The Ocean, Cattle Decapitation, and Revocation. And well, Animals as Leaders functioned as perfect background music I guess? They had some cool synchronized videos to go along with the music, but frankly AAL is an incredibly boring band, and the least fitting band on the tour. God knows why they're the direct support. 2/5 | 10 | | The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis
And then Dillinger. Set was something like: Prancer, Mona Lisa, Milk Lizard, 43% Burnt, One of Us is the Killer, I Wouldn't if You Didn't, When I Lost My Bet, Nothing's Funny, Sunshine the Werewolf, and Panasonic Youth. And holy hell was it insane. A cop nearly kicked me out for moshing too hard (?), I ended up with this massive welts on my forearms, my lower back, hips, and calves are all cramped to hell, and Dillinger played as perfectly as expected. Although I was expecting them to go crazy like I always hear about; odd that The Ocean was actually the wildest band all night. Still though, awesome way to end an awesome night. We followed up with some delicious steak fajita tacos from Taco Cabana. 5/5 (Dillinger as well as the tacos) | |

07.28.13 | One setlist I read said they played The Island in the Sea and Roots and Locusts on another date. They might be wrong, but I could swear the Ocean hasn't put out anything as heavy as that closing number since before anthropo/helio. | MosesMalone
07.28.13 | Although looking it up online tells me I'm wrong. Damn, maybe I've hated on Pelagial too much... | climactic
