04.28.14 | 1 should have won out of the final 4 imo, although I haven't heard that one with the weird cover art. 2 is pretty good too from what I've heard of it/remember from it. |
JamieTwort
04.28.14 | Didn't participate in this as I didn't have the time to check out the ones I hadn't heard or to refresh my memory on the ones I have but props for doing this. Although I've gotta say most obscure prog really doesn't come close to the classics for me. |
zakalwe
04.28.14 | I highly recommend the majority of the albums on the preliminary list JT dude. Some real corkers. |
Friday13th
04.28.14 | @Jamie thanks dude. The classics are hard to beat, I agree. Nevertheless, I think prog is one of the most rewarding genres in terms of digging up old forgotten relics and new little-known bands. I guess the only other genre I delved in deep was metal but that got old fairly quickly hearing rehashed Sabbath riffs and Dio wannabes. |
Friday13th
04.28.14 | I'm going with 1 though 2 is lots of fun |
JamieTwort
04.28.14 | I've found that as a genre prog has very few hidden gems that are able to come close to what the more well-known prog bands released in the 70's.
Psychedelic rock on the other hand is the opposite, so many great unknown albums to be discovered there. |
Friday13th
04.28.14 | I take that back. I love metal, but you know what I mean :P yeah, psych is great too I've been getting
into that stuff recently |
JamieTwort
04.28.14 | @zak: I might check out some of the ones I haven't heard at some point. I've heard a good chunk of them though, although not all in their entirety. |

04.28.14 | Maneige, and by far |

04.28.14 | "Psychedelic rock on the other hand is the opposite, so many great unknown albums to be discovered there."
Yes its fking endless, I need to find a good little shop in london selling battered old dog eared psych LPs from attic clearouts and funeral sales |
Jethro42
04.28.14 | Maneige is a total gem. Like every records they released, it's a beautiful blend of classical and jazz offered with a lot of instruments. Sebastian Hardie is simplistic and goes more to the rock side of the equation, but contains lots of great mélodies and mellotron. Welcome to the thread Jamie! |
Jethro42
04.28.14 | The five others Maneige' albums are all great too. And don't miss their live Composite. |

04.29.14 | Maneige gets my vote. |

04.29.14 | With regards to the obscure prog vs. classics debate, I'm really not one of those guys who says "oh, this is a critically acclaimed classic, nothing obscure is better" (no offense meant to anyone); I like to be open-minded in my musical views in general, and like to question generally accepted views. Don't get me wrong, bands like Rush, Floyd, Camel and Genesis will prob always be top tier material for me. But I like to open my mind to new ideas. Los Jaivas, for instance, does something that none of those bands does: Latin infusion. Now I've got a new fave to listen to. But that's just how I see things, and I respect those who disagree. |
Onirium
04.29.14 | Maneige gets my vote too |
mandan
04.29.14 | Also I think that what we perceive as a "classic" isn't something that's objectively verifiable. Albums like Close to the Edge, The Dark Side of the Moon, Selling England by the Pound and In the Court of the Crimson King aren't classics just because they're classics. Simply put, they've gotten more critical acclaim than other albums by other bands that existed around the same time. Hence they're considered classics. But no one's obligated to say that they're the best albums in prog history just because some "expert" said so. To say that would be to imply that The Godfather, Star Wars, and ET are objectively great movies because some film know-it-all said so. Just had to get this out of my system. |
MrSirLordGentleman
04.29.14 | danny's like fucking right imo. Of course, most of the time there's a reason why "big" albums are so popular, but there are some hidden gems for sure. I don't like how people see bands like Pink Floyd like if they were untouchable band. PF is easily on my top 3 bands of all time but I'm totally open-minded to accept that maybe, one day, I'll find something better than them. Most of the time, obscure albums don't get love because people don't want to accept that they may be better than their godly classics. And no, I'm not using Los Jaivas as an example, overall PF is a way better band for me (but I think Alturas should be treated as every classic album) |
Jethro42
04.29.14 | What is called classic prog music is both a mix of critical acclaimed material and quality music that outdoes some other prog works that happens to be middling when compared. Like any other kind of music, the material passes the test or not. Dépends if it's actually attractive or not. |
Friday13th
04.29.14 | yeah I think we all try to judge based on merit and not on fame. But I think most would agree that
they're not going to pick up an obscure or low-rated album unless someone they trust recommends it.
Enough trial and error has shown that my tastes aren't so far from the norm of prog fans and that I
like most popular stuff and rarely like the obscure stuff (if chosen randomly). That's why this list
has worked out 'cause you guys are all like-minded bros. I wouldn't do this contest with any random
users who grace this site with their snotty opinions haha |

My vote goes for Maneige in case it wasn't obvious haha |

04.29.14 | @MSLG, Friday & Jethro: Thanks guys, critical analysis is part of music appreciation. Can't always take things for granted in life. |
JamieTwort
04.29.14 | lol danny I'm not even sure what it is that you're trying to get out of your system. Nothing you've said really contradicts the point I was making and you seem to have got the wrong end of the stick about what I meant by "classic".
I'm not being close minded at all, I'm talking purely from experience. I've heard hundreds of obscure prog albums and literally none of them have the staying power of the best albums by the big, well-known prog bands (I won't use the word classic to avoid further confusion). I'm still checking that stuff out in the hope I'll find something special so I'm not being any less open minded than you. |
mandan
04.29.14 | Alrighty JT. Don't worry, it was just a reaction. I did my best to be respectful. |
