NorthernSkylark
08.25.14 | did you make this list just to mess with rainy day women. you sorry ass bastard :D |
Tunaboy45
08.25.14 | Anything by Opeth is perfect for a rainy day. |
Keyblade
08.25.14 | Noice
Dude try Recondite - Hinterland. Shit was made for rainy days |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | i'm pretty machiavellian on the sly yknow
|
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | thanks for the rec key, will check!
opeth is more like late-night music for me, it's too dramatic for mere rain |
evilford
08.25.14 | spina bifida |
Amphoteric
08.25.14 | Biosphere - Substrata
My all-time favorite rainy day album. I had such an amazing experience listening to it alone in the park when it was drizzling. |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | seems like people tend to favor ambient/electronic stuff for rainy days, which makes sense i guess. will check biosphere, my knowledge of this kinda stuff is pretty entry level so i feel i need to improve |
NorthernSkylark
08.25.14 | joni mitchell - blue
the antlers - burst apart
the raincoats - the raincoats
fleet foxes - helplessness blues
the microphones - the glow pt. 2
vu - s/t
|
Keyblade
08.25.14 | Substrata is the best place to start bro. Like Ampho said, perfect for rainy or overcast days as well |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | blue is a perfect album
don't know why i didn't think of the microphones, also mount eerie's lost wisdom is a go-to bad weather fave |
NorthernSkylark
08.25.14 | i would say the boatman's call fits this description too |
scottpilgrim10
08.25.14 | "10/10 album art YESSSSSSS"
deserving of a list by itself. |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | i think this is about the 2nd or 3rd of 39 lists where that's actually happened |
Archelirion
08.25.14 | Haven't listened to Nick Cave's most recent, but I expect it'd be fairly good quality. Still like Murder Ballads though. Good rainy day music absolutely! |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | i was gonna put murder ballads on the list but it's a lil' bit too grim for the mood i was going for. his latest is fantastic, much lower key and more pastoral than his earlier works but just as good |
NorthernSkylark
08.25.14 | the doors have some mad in-door/it's raining like a motherfucker outside jams |
Archelirion
08.25.14 | There's just not quite enough tears raining from the sky :L
I must admit though, Nick Cave even being 'relatively uplifting' intrigues me. Gonna give it a listen now I think. |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | we're talking relatively here...it's certainly not as fire-and-brimstone as his previous works, the
subject matter is more current and personal, and the t/t is kinda inspiring actually |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | also sorry northern, not a fan of the doors at all. some great music (esp. LA Woman), but i can't stand jim morrison's overbearing vocals and shitty 6th form poetry |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | it's been raining all day here and Emancipator or any trip hop is due |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | trip-hop is always a fine rainy day choice, thought about having blue lines or endtroducing on here |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | Never got into either of those albums but yeah, trip hop isn't too good when the sun is blasting down |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | one does not simply 'not get into' endtroducing! |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | Oh yes they do :] I don't even think it's that trip hoppy, more instrumental hip hop |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | yeah, you're right but i'm shite with genres and honestly is there really much difference? |
Archelirion
08.25.14 | Sounds pretty chilled so far, I'm enjoying it though. Water's Edge has more of that sinister edge that I know him for. Think I might go for some Trentemøller afterwards, or maybe the new Integral. (Or maybe some more downtempo/minimalist stuff if anyone can recommend any) |
NorthernSkylark
08.25.14 | MR MOJO RISIN
GOTTA KEEP ON RISIN |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | Entroducing doesn't have a prominent downtempo element that trip hop needs but people argue it's trip hop all the time... Difficult genre to pin point anyway so it doesn't matter |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | big fan of trentemoller. the nick cave picks up toward the latter half - jubilee street, higgs boson blues and the t/t are worth sticking around for
nicolas jaar's space is only noise is worth a listen, it's sort of downtempo/microhouse-y, but you've probably heard it already |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | choccy, don't you think midnight in a perfect world is fairly trip-hoppy? it's got that slow loping drumline, chilled-out synths, late night sorta mood |
Archelirion
08.25.14 | Haha, I'm very new to the genre, so I'll definitely give Jaar a listen! |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | jeff, check out Ocoeur and the a/t/o/s record? Good for rainy days too |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | There are exceptions, of course but as a whole there's more of a hip hop vibe to it than anything else |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | thanks for the rec, will check
not that this proves anything (not trying to be an asshole i promise) but the phrase trip-hop was actually coined to describe Dj shadow, according to RYM
@aaron, in that case listen to jon hopkins - immunity. not strictly downtempo but an incredible listen, one of my fave electronic albums ever for sure |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | I thought the term was made by a journalist trying to describe Massive Attack's sound? |
jefflebowski
08.25.14 | i'm perfectly prepared to accept that someone on RYM is bullshitting, your version of events seems more likely |
ChoccyPhilly
08.25.14 | I think it also depends on what you perceive to be the "true" trip hop album, whether it be Entroducing or Mezzanine or Dummy but they all have varying amounts of hip hop in it |
Eggvander
08.25.14 | Don't forget some good ol' Jar of Flies. |
Eggvander
08.25.14 | or even better Rain When I Die. |
Pheromone
10.02.14 | list rules bump |
