This Year

We say the years go by fast, but I think a year holds more than we rrealize. Sometimes, it's not about the obviously significant things in rlife, like falling in love or losing someone. It's the small moments rand memories that mean the most. I'm sure we all have stories to rbe told through music this year. Here's mine.
1King Crimson
Epitaph

Late last year, I endured a terrifying sickness of the mind. Depersonalization. In
my case, it was
extreme. This song encapsulates the fear
I felt long after I came out of it and the pounding heart that never seemed to go
away. I couldn't sleep,
and I thought of death.
2The Smiths
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Those months in my grandma's house. Playing FIFA with my brother. The dream-like
snow outside.
Riding around with my girlfriend in her van at night.
We're not together anymore. I kind of miss her.
3Queens of the Stone Age
I Appear Missing

My senior year of high school. Suppressing my fears with Xanax. Re-igniting a
friendship. Developing a
nasty addiction.
4The Black Keys
Lies

I went through a Black Keys phase, it was pretty cool.
5The Strokes
12:15

Very shortly after I came out of unreality. Staring out the window at the
snowfall. Feeling sort of okay.
6The Flaming Lips
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1

The dark period after the sickness. Something that really resonated with me when I
was in that place.
One of the best songs I've ever heard.
7Radiohead
Nude

Tying that stupid fucking noose.
8LCD Soundsystem
I Can Change

Hey! I love this shit, threw it on my FIFA soundtrack. Reminds me of the countless
hours I spent with
Ultimate Team and Pro Clubs, and also my new found love for LCD Soundsystem.
9Idiot Pilot
Last Chance

That weird nightmare I had. Wooden shacks underwater. Sea creatures eating little
girls. Waking up in a
bluish black.
10Led Zeppelin
Over The Hills and Far Away

Hanging out with a dude named Terry, learning to play this song. I don't remember
how to play it anymore.
11Queens of the Stone Age
You Think I Ain't Worth a Dollar, But I Feel Like a Millionare

First off, this song kicks fucking ass, also, I had a cool idea for a music video
to this that involved night
driving, stock car racing, fist fighting, flashbacks, and a crash at the end.
12alt-j
Breezeblocks

Another song I threw on the FIFA soundtrack. Infectious as fuck.
13Hot Chip
Flutes

A strange day. Watching hockey early in the morning. The sun piercing through the
living room window.
14National Skyline
Edge Of The World

Walking home from school in the middle of the day. Stopping at the cemetery.
Staring up at my town's
water tower. Sometimes these walks were cold and gray, sometimes humid and gray.
15Cold War Kids
Lost That Easy

Another song I listened to on walks.
16Alice In Chains
When the Sun Rose Again

Imagery of the sun rising in the desert. A comfortable day.
17The Get Up Kids
Holiday

Summertime. Moving back to my dad's. Parting ways with high school friends.
18Nine Inch Nails
The Only Time

Spending a lot of time in my room during summer, playing shit like Dishonored and
Ghost Recon, and
talking to this Russian girl on Skype.
19Weezer
Say It Ain't So

Her name was Natalia, and she really liked this song.
20Filter
Surprise

I went to a Filter/Helmet show in St. Louis, and it was probably the highlight of
my summer. Filter put
on a good show, but Helmet killed it with
their sound.
21Helmet
Broadcast Emotion

Seriously, it was badass.
22Pearl Jam
Alive

Waking up on some summer morning with this blaring through the stereo. Thanks,
Dad.
23Linkin Park
Papercut

Finally got a car. Made a driving playlist, this was the first song on it.
24Built to Spill
Some

I really like the fall, and I really like guitar music. Built to Spill was a great
discovery.
25Incubus
Stellar

Getting lost driving. Gas ain't cheap, but I don't mind long drives.
26Radiohead
Idioteque

Laying in bed, staring at the ceiling as this explodes through my speakers. This
song takes me
somewhere else.
27Run the Jewels
Oh My Darling Don't Cry

I've always loved hip-hop, but not as much as this. Good for your ears, good for
your ego. I've explored
a lot of different rap artists after hearing this.
28Thom Yorke
Harrowdown Hill

Reminds me of hanging out with my dog. He's a Shepard, his name is Silas, and he's
cool as fuck.
29Crosses
This Is A Trick

Earlier in the year. Sleeplessness. Anxiety. Something to scream to.
30The Postal Service
Such Great Heights

A sweet song.
31Interpol
Evil

So, I really like this girl, and I've known her for like two years. We've become
pretty close over the past
few months. We plugged this a whole bunch (plug.dj). I should let her know how I
feel.
32Baths
You're My Excuse to Travel

She's from where I live, but she goes to school in Chicago. She's home for the
holidays, we've hung out,
and I've yet to make a move.
33Joyce Manor
Christmas Card

But I totally will before she leaves.
34King Crimson
I Talk to the Wind

Last winter was hell.
35Bon Iver
Re: Stacks

This winter is okay.
