01.03.15 | Voting ends Tuesday |
JJKeys
01.03.15 | watching this thread - I'll check these out in a bit |
SharkTooth
01.03.15 | 2 looks like some audio counterpart to an old pop up book for toddlers tbh |
manosg
01.03.15 | So glad to get back to the '70s. I'm sure both albums gonna be great. |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | Even if I know Double Dimple by heart since always, I find myself relistening to it first. I can't get enough of that double dimple!!
Good introduction, Friday. Very informative! |
Mad.
01.03.15 | I remember liking Spartacus, looking forward to listening to 1. |
manosg
01.03.15 | Just finished 1 and it's great! A bit of mindfuck at times but a great album. |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | ^What do you mean by ''mindfuck'' for those who like me, English isn't the mother tongue? |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | @Mad, if you liked Spartacus, you will enjoy Double Dimple probably even more! |
Torontonian
01.03.15 | ^he probably means that it was overwhelmingly complex at times. Happy New Year by the way! |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | Oh yes in this case you're right, manosg. Album is catchy and complex at the same time... A dangerous combination!
Happy New Year Torontonian! |
manosg
01.03.15 | Torontonian got the idea, haha. It's a bit complex and overall a very demanding album but rewarding too.
Happy New Year guys! |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | Yes indeed, to everybody, best wishes for the new year!
Alusa Fallax sounds really great after one spin. I can hear some Locanda Delle Fate, Finisterre, Harmonium, and several winks to PFM, for instance at 11 min 50, it's similar to the ending of ''Appena un po'', from ''Per un Amico''. The ending of Alusa Fallax is so majestic! I'm currently on my second listen of it.
|
Jethro42
01.03.15 | oh, and I can also hear some great Maneige for #2...And it's rather at 11min40 that I hear kind of the ending of song ''Appena un po'' by PFM. |
Onirium
01.03.15 | I liked Spartacus and their debut a lot, so 1 seems very promising. |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | 1 is breathtaking and is their magnum opus to me.
Alusa Fallax is up there with the best RPI (rock progressivo Italiano). It's really varied, and it's flirting with classical music throughout. Songwriting and musicianship are top notch. I have to listen 2 or 3 times before a verdict.
|
menawati
01.03.15 | pity this match up in first round want both to go through |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | It's a narrow corridor... |
gagnonov
01.03.15 | vote goes to 2, shit is tight |
Friday13th
01.03.15 | I didn't like the singer in 2 the first time around, but I'm starting to warm up to his style. |
Jethro42
01.03.15 | Yeah, their singer sounds quite a bit like the guy from Locanda Delle Fate after a night of heavy drinking and smoking. His voice is somewhat rough, yet holds a certain charm.
Locanda Delle Fate; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGwNECQslEQ |
Friday13th
01.04.15 | yeah I've heard the first Locanda album |
Friday13th
01.04.15 | lol Track 8 of Alusa Fallax |
Jethro42
01.04.15 | I love how all the Alusa Fallax songs are joined as one, and are at the same time separated by a collage of various styles. It's full of classical nuances and folky acoustic touches. They're also incorporating rocky sections and jazzy passages (even some latin rumba) and it's full of life and emotion...
...I don't want to seem biased, but I have much more pleasure to listen to Double Dimple. Their classically trained keyboardist is absolutely spectacular. The drummer is a machine, and the bassman is very talented at the guitars too. The radical changes of the structures are phenomenal. The album is one of the most clearly progressive ones I ever heard. The arrangements and skills of the musicians are wonderful. So without hesitation, I'll take Double Dimple. |
Onirium
01.04.15 | 1 is excellent, and as always with them it kind of feels like listening to an actually good version of ELP.
It will require more listens though, but so far it isn't as satisfying and fun as Spartacus for me. I still
feel like it has a lot more to offer though. |
Jethro42
01.04.15 | Double Dimple moves me more than Spartacus. The latter drags a little bit at places. Side B contains some huge gems though. Double Dimple is kind of a perpetual suspense and is great from A to Z. I guess it takes couple of listenings to sink in. I own this album since the late 70s, and trust me, it's groundbreaking. |
MeatSalad
01.04.15 | Heard 1 once, decent but had trouble staying focused on it. Gotta check the other out asap |
TwigTW
01.04.15 | I think Jethro got it exactly right, ''Illusions on a Double Dimple is the best ELP album, ELP never did.''
|
SCREAM!
01.04.15 | Both of these rule damn |
SCREAM!
01.04.15 | The drum sound on 1 can be kind of awful at times though. Still it has the potential to win this round. Both need at least another listen |
Jethro42
01.04.15 | Yes the drum sound is kind of muffled sometimes, but it doesnt stop the qualities of that beast of a drummer.
And yes, both of these rule...
Cheers TWIG |
AnimalsAsSummit
01.04.15 | these lists are the best thing on this site. gonna check em |
SharkTooth
01.04.15 | you should participate next time dude |
Friday13th
01.04.15 | aw shux, Animals :] Yeah dude, join in on the jamming. |
Friday13th
01.04.15 | Yeah so I bumped my rating for 2. The singer isn't so bad, and the last 3 songs were better than I remembered. Still gonna vote for Triumvirat though. That's a pleasure through and through. |
Jethro42
01.04.15 | Yeah Illusions is really inventive and powerful, I also fully enjoy it. Can't get enough of that sheer prog. You should try Spartacus too. It's a Illusions' close cousin.
As for Alusa Fallax, I think my favorite is the last one. What a way to end the album! So dreamy... |
SharkTooth
01.04.15 | I can't find the time to jam these): |
AnimalsAsSummit
01.05.15 | definitely will get in on it next time |
Calc
01.05.15 | I vote fo Alusa Fallax |
menawati
01.05.15 | keyboards are very wakemanish on 1, track 2 reminds me of Awaken |
SharkTooth
01.05.15 | like both of 'em, but I need to listen to both again before voting |
menawati
01.05.15 | yes me too, hard to pick |
TwigTW
01.05.15 | Toughest round yet, want to vote for both of them. |
SharkTooth
01.05.15 | it was hard enough at the round with my album, this is even harder |
Friday13th
01.05.15 | 2-2 |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | ''keyboards are very wakemanish on 1, track 2 reminds me of Awaken''
Yes, keyboards can remind of Wakeman here and there, it's not a secret. As for Awaken, that song was released 3 years after Illusions of a Double Dimple. |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | ''Illusions _on_ a Double Dimple'' sorry.
Also band is not only inspired by ELP, but also by Yes and Renaissance. |
Friday13th
01.05.15 | Yeah, menawati, you sound uncharacteristically plebby today! Bit of a failed attempt at mudslinging ;] |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | Yes we play with roughness at the end of this round ;) |
zakalwe
01.05.15 | Contracting a bout of allusa fallax sounds horrific.
Rather that though than an illusion on me double dimple.
Allusa fallax gets the vote |
Friday13th
01.05.15 | lol zak, 2-3 then |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | Double Dimple forever in my heart. Nothing could change that. |
SCREAM!
01.05.15 | Triumvirat gets my vote. Both are great but that one has more "wow" moments than Alusa. Those keys coupled with that drummer are ridiculous and the singer is better as well |
Onirium
01.05.15 | This is a really hard pick, but my vote goes to Alusa Fallax. As much as I thought I'd end up voting for
Double Dimple, I just happened to find Alusa Fallax a little more creative and interesting. I always love
some prog with folk, classical and jazz influences brought to the mix. Double Dimple was really great too
though, but the occasional ELP influences (albeit better than anything those guys ever put out) are just
less my kind of thing I guess. Sorry Jethro ;) |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | It's not over till it's over. |
menawati
01.05.15 | "Yeah, menawati, you sound uncharacteristically plebby today! Bit of a failed attempt at mudslinging ;]"
i wasnt implying anything just saying the keyboard structures reminded me a lot of rick wakeman up and down and up scaley things (probably a proper musical word for that but cant remember it) |
JJKeys
01.05.15 | Starting to listen to Triumvirat - not sure what to think of it yet |
Friday13th
01.05.15 | 3-4
lol mena I know just messing with you |
Mad.
01.05.15 | Triumvirat is pretty heavy-going |
JJKeys
01.05.15 | Urgh I've been feeling like crap tonight; and both are getting on my nerves - I'm sure they're better than how I'm hearing them, but the synthesizers are getting on my tits. I'll give them some more spins in future to give them a sporting chance and rate them then
2 is the least grating so my vote goes to 2 |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | ''Triumvirat is pretty heavy-going''
That makes the charm of the album. It's well balanced though with subdued, soft piano (keys) parts. Drummer and bassist play with great energy to suit the keyboardist bursts. Because of its softer parts, Double Dimple sounds even more ''heavy-going'' |
Mad.
01.05.15 | Yeah that is true, the soft piano is nice and there's great energy, it's just a lot to take in
The vox/lyrics come across as slightly cheesy though, perhaps due to age |
Friday13th
01.05.15 | The singing on 2 is way cheesier...and I have a hunch those Italian lyrics are equally cheesey lol
3-5 |
Jethro42
01.05.15 | The Triumvirat vocalist sounds pretty much like Peter Gabriel, so it's all okay with me. I would have thought that his strong German accent would have bothered listeners the most. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | drums on illusions are awesome |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | i really liked both but did anyone else find the butt fart squeltching keyboards in Intorno off of 2 just awful? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | that album would be like a 5 for me if it wasnt for butt fart feltching keyboards at times |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | all in all 2 gains points for bean burrito gypsy swag and then immediately loses them for shitting out the bean burritos violently through a synth. i vote for 1 |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | lol yeah that will ruin a 5.
So now it's 4-5. |
MrSirLordGentleman
01.06.15 | I'm digging Cyndi Lauper instead of these right now, I'm doing something wrong? |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | if we need your vote then yes |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | Ugh Gentleman do I look like your priest? Now is not the time for confessions...it's time for hard proggging with triple g's! |
SCREAM!
01.06.15 | 4 g's if you count the one at the end there ;) |
SharkTooth
01.06.15 | Can ya leave this up for 1 more day? Weekdays really took down my progging time): |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | The end of tomorrow and that's it. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | gee wilikers |
MeatSalad
01.06.15 | votin for 1 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | looks like all the trve proggers are votin for 1 |
gagnonov
01.06.15 | but then again, trve proggers would listen to more than one genesis album :-# |
MeatSalad
01.06.15 | 1 is far better than most of the stuff elp did |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | i just realized i basically just opted out of the pleb prog round, i didnt even mean to but i aint shook
"but then again, trve proggers would listen to more than one genesis album :-#"
then again, trve proggers wouldnt be dumb enough to view a ratings page as a literal catalogue for all music thats ever passed through the ears of its owner |
MeatSalad
01.06.15 | "then again, trve proggers wouldnt be dumb enough to view a ratings page as a literal catalogue for all music thats ever passed through the ears of its owner"
this
i haven't rated most of the stuff from this contest, mostly because i don't like rating things that I don't actually have on my computer in some form or physical |
gagnonov
01.06.15 | i'm so prog i breathe in 7/8 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | "i haven't rated most of the stuff from this contest, mostly because i don't like rating things that I don't actually have on my computer in some form or physical"
i just dont have the patience to go rate everything i had rated on my old account good god that would be tedious |
manosg
01.06.15 | Both great albums but my vote goes to 1. For some reason, 2 depressed me a bit and brought to my mind pictures from 70s movies which in general I don't enjoy much. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.06.15 | you're weird |
manosg
01.06.15 | I wouldn't be on here if I wasn't... |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | 6-5 |
SharkTooth
01.06.15 | "The end of tomorrow and that's it."
thanks dude |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | Yeah so bring em in. The next one is coming up for those who already voted. |
menawati
01.06.15 | if you can vote in a round that has your own album in it I vote for 1 anyway to make it 7-5 and avoid the
unnecessary crap of a tiebreaker |
SharkTooth
01.06.15 | Ok I have my vote(1) |
SCREAM!
01.06.15 | @mena vote for whichever you prefer and let Friday worry about tie breakers ;) |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | SharkTooth is avoiding the tie, you still wanna vote 1 mena? |
menawati
01.06.15 | erm yes sure just get to next round :] |
SCREAM!
01.06.15 | Mena just doesn't want to openly admit that he prefers Jethro's album to his own ;) |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | Alrighty then 8-5. It'll be a couple hours before I get the next one up. |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | Hey I think mena is being pretty brave. |
menawati
01.06.15 | I like them both a lot, pretty even, dont really care what 'wins' it's just sharing some sounds innit |
TwigTW
01.06.15 | Triumvirate has been on my to-do list forever. Now I wish I hadn't waited so long. Double Dimple is a great album, it gets my vote.
|
TwigTW
01.06.15 | "just sharing some sounds" that's the best part, 16 albums I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise. |
OwMySnauze
01.06.15 | Alusa Fallax gets my vote |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | yeah "just sharing sounds" is the main goal, the rest is just bonus and...bait, if you will :D 9-6 |
Jethro42
01.06.15 | Wow, this took an unexpected turn. I'm glad to see there are couple more Triumvirat fans in there. I appreciate Alusa Fallax too. I love how they mix the classical influences with several other genres throughout the album, and I love how it flows.
Double Dimple impress by its sheer melody sense, the great and powerful arrangements and the skillfully playing. It sometimes sounds pompous and is always energetic and involving. Keyboardist performance is absolutely stunning. |
MeatSalad
01.06.15 | Double dimple gets a little cheesy at times but its really great regardless, was nice to come back to it |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | yay we actually cranked that Double Dimple rating average up |
Jethro42
01.06.15 | It was pretty tight. Since yesterday, I thought game was over for Triumvirat. |
MeatSalad
01.06.15 | Both are great but italian stuff usually doesnt do a lot for me with some exceptions like pfm and maxophone
Maxophone is italian, right? |
Jethro42
01.06.15 | Yes, they are, and they made a one shot winner album. You also get Locanda Delle Fate, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, Quella Vecchia Locanda... |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | Banco is my favorite, though I've never heard Maxophone. |
SCREAM!
01.06.15 | Don't forget Alphataurus! One of my favourites from the last prog contest |
Jethro42
01.06.15 | A fantastic example, Friday;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWPZ_jPBnAs |
Jethro42
01.06.15 | Yeah Alphataurus-Alphataurus is another classic of the Rock Progressivo Italiano's movement. |
Friday13th
01.06.15 | ^ sweet song, good variety. I'll have to check em out after these four. |
Jethro42
01.06.15 | P/ |
Friday13th
01.07.15 | Just for the record, Triumvirat is triumphirant. |
