An Introductory Jazz(ish) List

I've really been digging jazz lately so i thought i'd make a rudimentary list for rpeople like me that are rrrrrrrjust getting starting with the genere and are looking for rsomehting new. Also tried to diversify the rrrrlist rrrto include something for everyone. rNevertheless, this basically sums up my jazz knowledge.
1Art Blakey
Free For All

TraditionalJazz(1964)-
2Stanley Clarke
Stanley Clarke

70's Jazz Fusion-
3Eric Clapton
Live From Madison Square Garden

Blues
4John Coltrane
A Love Supreme

Progressive Jazz- This is it, this is where it all began for me. John Coltrane's best work is
surprisingly his most accessible, despite being extrmely complex. The reason i say its the
most accessible is because it just has SOO much to offer. Whether you wanna just focus on
Coltrane's beautiful notes on the sax or want to listen to the overall musicianship of the
group, you will be blown away regarless. Probably my favorite jazz album (as well as one of
my all time favorites) and an album that makes for a great introductory into "the real thing"
of jazz. I could listen to this album 100x and not tire of it!
5Boud Deun
The Stolen Bicycle

Experimental Jazz, Jazz Fusion- has only one vote, deserves at least 50
6Miles Davis
'Round About Midnight

Jazz, Hard-Bop- underrated
7Dixie Dregs
What If

Jazz Fusion, Progressive Rock-
8Eric Dolphy
Out to Lunch

Avant garde Jazz-
9 Bill Evans
Everbody Digs Bill Evans

Piano Jazz, Smooth Jazz-
10Gil Evans
The Individualism of Gil Evans

Jazz- Album is amazing, its really hard to describe but if i had to give an overall description
it would be "progressive-avantgarde-fusion Jazz". Simply put, just listen to the fucker
11Focus
Focus 3

Progressive Rock with Jazz fusion, Live album-
12Stan Getz
Getz/Gilberto

Jazz, Bossa Nova- If you want a less provincial jazz album
13Herbie Hancock
Maiden Voyage

Jazz- Check this one instead of "head hunters" as its much better in my opinion.
14Bobby Hutcherson
Dialogue

Avant Garde jazz- If you like eric dolphy's "Out to Lunch" this one is essenetial listening as
well.
15Ihsahn
After

Progressive Metal with Jazz Elements- This one's for all you metalheadz
16Dexter Gordon
Our Man in Paris

Jazz, Hard-Bop- Best Hard-Bop album not called Blue Train.
17Keith Jarrett
The Köln Concert

Piano Jazz, Live album- Good Stuff and fairly accessible
18King Crimson
Islands

Progressive Rock with Jazz and Classical Music elements- i really like this album
19the Mars Volta
Amputechture

Jazzy Progressive Rock - Again, I really like this album
20Mahavishnu Orchestra
Birds of fire

Jazz Fusion- A Technical yet emotion album that rewards with repeated listens.
21Diana Krall
Live In Paris

Jazz with Vocals, Live album- A bunch of well played jazz covers, a great album for when its
the holidays.
22Charles MIngus
Mingus Ah Um

Hard Bop, Jazz- Most people begin with "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", which is a
complex beast. Both are incredible, but I think this is a much better introduction into his
body of work.
23John Mayall
Jazz Blues Fusion

Jazz Blues Fusion, Live album- Despite name, album is much more blues than jazz. included
it as it still has SOME jazz, plus its really good.
24Thelonious Monk
Criss-Cross

Jazz- also a great album for when its christmas time, i included it because its really good,
but also because i find his piano playing to be excessively self indulgent most of the time.
But on this album he ( as well as other musicians) really nail it. here's a challenge, try
listening to this album without tapping your feet even once. You won't last two minutes.
25Frank Zappa
Hot rats

Jazz fusion, psychedelic-
26 Nina Simone
any best of album

Jazz with vocals- i initially bought my mom a nina simone cd as a gift for
christmas, not knowing it would be so damn amazing, so im the one listening to it 90% of
the time now. Her voice really is breathtaking.
27Charlie Parker
Charlie Parker with Strings: The Master Takes

40's Jazz- Really good and the strings add a whole new dimension to the already great sax
playing.
28Ozric Tentacles
Strangeitude

Psychedelic with jazz fusion-
29Jakszyk, Fripp and Collins
A Scarcity of Miracles

Jazz Fusion-
30Sonny Rollins
Saxophone Colossus

Hard-Bop Classic
31The Quintet
Jazz At Massey Hall

Hard Bop, Live- A great concert with 5 legends all in one room. This one gets bonus points
since it was recorded in toronto.
32Alex Skolnick Trio
Veritas

Jazz Fusion Covers- I usually don't like these types of albums that play rock songs in jazz
fusion style but this one is an exception.
33Trioscapes
Digital Dream Sequence

Progressive Jazz Fusion- One overlooked album from 2014, rewards with repeated listens.
34Robert Wyatt
Ruth is Stranger than Richard

Experimental, Jazz Fusion- Wyatt ditches the more intimate style of "Rock Bottom" for a
more experimental, weird and jazzy album. Its such as shame that most people who even go
as far as fiving "Rock Bottom" never even give its follow up (this) the time of day.
35Wayne Shorter
Speak No Evil

Jazz, Hard-Bop- Started
listening to this album this week and it really is great.
36Cecile Mclorin Salvant
Womanchild

Jazz Covers with Vocals- SHe has one of the best voices i've ever heard . I can't believe i almost forgot this one.
37Us3
Hand on the Torch

Jazz Rap- let me make it crystal clear that i don't even like hip-hop, but this album is rly juicy and fun. Only has one vote too so give this
a listen!
