Torontonian: An Introductory Jazz(ish) List

Torontonian 02.21.15	sup, finally made a list that isn't drivel. i was initially gonna do small write ups for all of them but i got lazy, so i'll do them individually on request if you think that'll help you decide which one to listen to . jazz recs are also welcome.

ComeToDaddy 02.21.15	Great list dude, major props for 12. I personally disagree hard on 13 but Head Hunters was what got me into jazz so I'm a bit biased haha. I'm sure you've already checked them, but The Dave Brubeck Quartets 'Time Out' and Grant Greens 'Idle Moments' are some of my favorite jazz albums. That first one is an important part of jazz history, so really big recommendation if you haven't already listened Seconding Shark's recs for Cowboy Bebop OSTs and The Bridge too.

Onirium 02.21.15	Great list, I think it does make for a good introduction to the genre. You seem to like prog and avant-garde in your jazz (props for including Islands by the way, it's probably in my top 3 KC and unjustifiably hated). There's a lot of good stuff of that kind, but here are just some albums I think you would really like: Pat Metheny Group - The Way Up (contemporary, prog-tinted jazz with a strong emphasis on organic textures and improvisation) The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out (the classic cool jazz album, with an overlying theme of the use of uncommon time signatures) Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (perhaps Davis' most experimental and interesting album in my opinion) Tigran Hamasyan - Shadow Theater (contemporary proggy jazz again, although with Armenian folk influences adding a whole new dimension) I think most of what is in this list will please you as well: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1042401&listid=149587

Friday13th 02.21.15	Yeah man, In a Silent Way is fantastic. I hear people say Time Out is overrated all the time. Whatevs. It has a lot of classical piano for people expecting straight jazz. It's also the most famous "white-man" jazz (even though the bass player is black), so some people assume it must be racist or something silly like that. I'm more into jazz with structure and I find it far more interesting and original then some Coltrane albums where he's noodling like a mad man for 40 minutes. That's just my taste.
Torontonian 02.21.15	Its all a matter of taste! Time out was the first jazz album ever to sell a million records. Check 9 you'd dig based off of what you just said. Very classical-esque piano ,is immensely engrossing, album is almost all piano actually.

Jethro42 02.21.15	Excellent list, Torontonian. I'm listening to 34 atm. I suggest you to try Vital Information (jazz fusion with a lot of brass) Scott Henderson (jazz fusion/blues leanings) I second Pat Metheny Have you considered Al Di Meola?

Torontonian 02.21.15	@dusty hehe i was just using the term broadly, maybe it isnt technically "smooth Jazz" but "smooth" is the adjective that comes to mind when i think of that album. @Jethro Nice! 34 gets better every time i hear it, very underrated imo. And no i didn't consider it because i've never heard of them! i appreciate the recs.
