Quartuma 2/2015
i kinda rushed on this i know |
30 | | Twenty One Pilots Blurryface
hip-hop/pop rock. this was getting high ratings so i figured why not check it out. turned out three songs in i almost threw up. unbearably cheesy and overproduced. 1.4/5 |
29 | | As It Is Never Happy, Ever After
pop punk. probably the least interesting pop punk album of the year. this is everything that is wrong with the genre. 1.5/5 |
28 | | Silverstein I Am Alive In Everything I Touch
post-hardcore. i don’t even know why i listened to this because silverstein has always sounded juvenile, unoriginal and bland to me. this album doesn’t change my opinion in any way. 2/5 |
27 | | Mew +-
dream pop. bleh, i was never a fan of no more stories either but this is even more boring for the most part. 2.3/5 |
26 | | Agnostic Front The American Dream Died
hardcore punk. tbqh i have never really cared for agnostic front that much and this isn’t any better than i expected. i’m quite surprised these nyhc legends are still making music. 2.5/5 |
25 | | Refused Freedom
post-hardcore. one of my most anticipated albums in 2015 so far also proves to be the biggest disappointment of the year so far. refused don’t give a shit about what people want them to do but this is experimentation gone all wrong. 2.5/5 |
24 | | Muse Drones
alt rock. it’s great to hear muse sounding like muse again after the senseless experimentation of their last two albums but it’s also very disappointing to hear they can’t get anywhere near the level of their early 00s records. 2.6/5 |
23 | | Citizen Everybody Is Going To Heaven
post-hardcore. sounds like brand new if they stopped caring about cohesion. 2.6/5 |
22 | | Ceremony (USA-CA) The L-Shaped Man
post-punk. i have no idea what they’re going for with these joy division rip-off songs. zzzzzzzz. 2.6/5 |
21 | | And So I Watch You From Afar Heirs
math rock. this band is still technically quite impressive but that’s about it. i just don’t get any kicks from this. 2.8/5 |
20 | | Drudkh A Furrow Cut Short
folky black metal. such a disappointing release after the great eternal turn of the wheel. drudkh fails to do anything actually interesting on here. 2.8/5 |
19 | | God Is An Astronaut Helios/Erebus
post-rock. after origins it seemed like giaa’s story is over but helios/erebus proved me wrong. i’m glad that they finally try something different and stray from their predictable-as-fuck formula. sadly the heavier moments on this are very, very average. 3/5 |
18 | | Envy Atheist's Cornea
screamo/post-rock. it’s still envy and it’s still good but it also sounds way too much like it’s all been heard before. 3.1/5 |
17 | | The Tallest Man on Earth Dark Bird Is Home
indie folk. a bit overproduced for my taste but this guy can still write some great folk tunes. 3.3/5 |
16 | | Doda Lov Allt Vi Har Kvar
screamo. i love post-rock tinged screamo and this is also really well done but i still feel it lacks something to make it really powerful. 3.3/5 |
15 | | Gallows Desolation Sounds
hardcore punk. the british hardcore “giants” haven’t really been relevant in years but desolation sounds shows they still got it. 3.4/5 |
14 | | KEN mode Success
post-hardcore/noise rock. ken mode strip down all the metal elements from their music and the result is a very albini-like album which kinda lacks ken mode’s identity but still manages to be quite an intriguing effort. 3.4/5 |
13 | | Raein Perpetuum
screamo. you can always rely on good ol’ raein but they’re still missing the album that would really bring them up along with the legends of the genre. 3.5/5 |
12 | | Built to Spill Untethered Moon
indie rock. built to spill will probably never again reach their 90s stuff in quality but, like raein, you can always count on them when it’s about making a worthwhile album. 3.6/5 |
11 | | Ennui (ITA) Al fin di mostrare di non sapere cosa alcuna
screamo. the proper envy album of 2015. 3.6/5 |
10 | | Marriages Salome
shoegaze. such a satisfying debut full-length and even though i know marriages is capable of even better i still really really like this a lot. 3.8/5 |
9 | | Sun Kil Moon Universal Themes
indie folk. the surprise release of the year. while everyone is still jizzing over last year’s benji, it gets easily unnoticed that sun kil moon already has a new album, which is actually even better than its predecessor. 3.8/5 |
8 | | A God or an Other / The Vatican The Great Northern
blackened crust punk. heavy as fuck. everyone interested in blackened crust should check out this excellent split between two very promising bands. 3.9/5 |
7 | | mewithoutYou Pale Horses
indie rock/post-hardcore. mewithoutyou provide a logical, no-surprises follow-up to ten stories. it rules, naturally. 3.9/5 |
6 | | Bosse-de-Nage All Fours
atmospheric black metal. one of the most intriguing and creative black metal albums i’ve heard all year. finally a post-bm album that shows the genre doesn’t have to be a one-trick pony. 4/5 |
5 | | Ghost of a Dead Hummingbird Sin Forma
screamo. ghost of a dead hummingbird may not provide anything groundbreaking on their debut but sin forma is an extremely beautiful skramz album and you know i’m a real sucker for this kind of music. 4/5 |
4 | | Rosetta Quintessential Ephemera
post-metal. it’s soothing to hear rosetta leaving the anaesthete’s mistakes in the past and instead going in a lighter direction which works incredibly well. rosetta’s back guise. 4.1/5 |
3 | | ostraca deathless
screamo. i have never heard kilgore trout but if they’re anything like this i’ll love them. deathless is a heavy and powerful screamo album, definitely one of the best in the genre this year. 4.2/5 |
2 | | Steve Von Till A Life Unto Itself
folk. this was my first touch in von till’s solo stuff and my god was i impressed. a near-perfect dark, atmospheric folk album. steve’s voice couldn’t fit more in this. 4.5/5 |
1 | | Titus Andronicus The Most Lamentable Tragedy
punk rock. *actually a q3 album but it leaked early in june so* after the (slight) misstep that was local business titus andronicus get back on the right track. the most lamentable tragedy is an ambitious punk rock opera full of sweet tunes, twists and turns. despite its overwhelming length the album still keeps its cohesive surprisingly well. not a single dull moment found in here. 4.7/5 |
