Friday’s Prog Tourney Preliminary

Welcome to the third progressive rock album tournament in the Elite/Overlooked/Obscure series! It’s been a year since the last, and there will be some changes in scheduling. Mark your calendars, because the next 9 Fridays are prog days! Read the comments for rules, schedule and other details.
1Phoenix (Romania)
Cantafabule

"Romania isn't the first country that comes to mind for prog bands, but here's a band that released a progressive folk double-album of the highest quality in songwriting. Harmonized singing, classical instruments, heavy prog elements, synthesizers galore...this album has it all." - Friday13th

2Utopia
Todd Rundgren's Utopia

"While not exactly obscure by any means, this band fronted by Todd Rundgren was his expansion into the realm of progressive rock, previously flirted with on albums such as "Something/Anything?", "A Wizard, A True Star", and "Todd". "Utopia" is his first full-on attempt at progressive rock, and while truly excessive at some points (seriously, a thirty-minute instrumental epic?), this album is perhaps as challenging as any other album in the genre, yet is far more accessible due to Rundgren's pop sensibilities lingering on tracks such as 'Freedom Fighters'." - Frippertronics

3Blue Effect
Modry Efekt & Radim Hladik

"A gem from Czechoslovakia, Modry sports amazing guitar solos, a tight rhythm section, and an amazing atmosphere due to the album being nearly all instrumental. In addition to that there's flutes." - Sharktooth

4Landberk
One Man Tells Another

"Album is about dark atmospheres. The music is soaked through in melancholy and sadness with an overpowering sense of beauty." - Jethro42

5Blops
Locomotora

"Chilean prog rock. Unlike other latin prog bands like Los Jaivas, Blops lack that "latin" flavour in their sound, which certainly isn't that good when you're focusing on originality, but it is a good sign for those that find too hard to get into Jaivas. Flute and bass driven instrumental prog that shows some excellent technique and creates a pretty relaxing atmosphere." - MrSirLordGentleman

6Arachnoid
Arachnoid

"Whacky French prog that will leave you scratching your head in that really satisfying way only a good, crazy prog album can." - SCREAM!

7Pererin
Haul Ar Yr Eira

"Atmospheric folk-prog recorded in a cow shed near Caernarfon in North Wales and released in 1980. The band interlaces Welsh folk traditions with tinges of the 70s-era progressive music. Plenty of layered vocal arrangements to be had and flutes or Mike Oldfield-style guitar solos lead the many instrumental passages." - bnelso55

8Samla Mammas Manna
Maltid

"Such a peculiar, eccentric and light-hearted record from the Swedish arm of the Rock in Opposition movement. Musically joyous and sincere, the band blends a jazzy, free prog style with the Swedish musical tradition, creating a heartfelt record as very few prog artists have. Note: the final three tracks on the YouTube link are bonus tracks which did not appear on the original album. Make of that what you will, I guess." - Onirium

9Julian Jay Savarin
Waiters on the dance

"Prog, with a little psych thrown in. Savarin is the songwriter and keyboardist, so these songs are keyboard driven. Savarin put out two albums in the early seventies before he moved on to become a writer (still publishing today)." - TWIGtheWONDERKID

10Seven Impale
City of the Sun

"City of the Sun is a great and innovative take on the Graaf Generator and King Crimson (especially Wetton era) school of eclectic prog rock, bringing in a vast yet stable blend of jazz fusion, hard rock, and symphonic rock into one obscure Nordic prog gem. The beginning and ending epics "Oh My Gravity" and "God Left Us for a Black-Dressed Woman" especially show a band of the traditional prog scene that can make unusually structured songs that are second-to-none." - Snowdog808

11Pascal Duffard
Dieu est Fou

"Beautiful zeuhl inspired prog that is very difficult to pin down; it transitions from complete strangeness to utter poignancy (in the vein of classical and chamber) with seamless ease. It was released in 1976, and does not sound like much else at that time; so odd, for the sake of description, its best not to compare to anything else. The closest comparison is if Harmonium decided to do zeuhl, or something even more bizarre. A hidden prog gem if there ever was one!" - AnimalsAsSummit

12Jade Warrior
Last Autumn's Dream

"Tranquil and experimental early prog rock with oriental tendencies. The fusion of East and West leads to some very interesting and dreamlike passages." - manosg

13Cressida
Asylum

"Bit of a toss up between this and their s/t debut, but this is a fantastic and easily digestible symphonic prog album that deserves far more recognition." - MeatSalad

14Stark Naked
Stark Naked

"Psych, prog leanings and keyboards from '71. Imagine Aqualung but stark bollock naked." - zakalwe

15Juha Kujanpää
Kivenpyörittäjä (Tales And Travels)

"Great album, mixes instrumental prog rock with jazz and traditional folk. this is nothing like the classic prog rock you're expecting to hear though. just like last tourney's winner, i uploaded this one to the database, so you can be sure it's obscure as fuck. one of the few modern prog rock acts i greatly enjoy." - gagnonov

16Alan Sorrenti
Aria

"Sorrenti's exceptional vocals are one of the most appreciated in the Italian progressive rock area. United with the genre's classic instruments plus extras like violin to create a dreamlike atmosphere, the album sounds just like its cover artwork. Calling it a collection of ballads would be reductive, the huge title tracks will show what I mean. Also, there is no electric guitar... but wait until you hear what the man does with his voice." - Sabrutin
