05.03.16 | "If Spurs had no Europa distraction then we'd have walked the league this season but fair play to Leicester"
Very optimistic assessment.
Congratz to Ranieri and the Foxes. Hope they can keep this team together and maybe improve in a few areas (looking at you Simpson and Fuchs) and maybe bully some Big Name Teams in the Champions League. They really need to add some depth to the squad if they don't want to crash and burn next season. If any of their key players (Mahrez, Kante, Drinkwater, Huth, Morgan) got injured or tired, they'd be instantly fucked. They can kinda replace Vardy at least for a short time wth Okazaki and Uloa but all the other key players are irreplaceable in their squad. |
TheWrenKing
05.03.16 | commentators love to remind you that Leicester "struggle without that 'out-ball'" that vardy gives them but it's very overstated. They're not lost without him. Could do with another quick striker though |

05.03.16 | Aaaaaaand Arsenal bottled the league again. I just want them to get a good striker and a respectable centre back that's not Gabriel, sell the fuck out of Giroud and Walcott and that's it. Arsenal could easily win the league if they do that. Anyways, really happy for Leicester, what an amazing achievement. |
Deez
05.03.16 | Superb stuff. Weird someone winning the league and their being no animosity. I cant see them being top 4 next season especially with the toll europe takes out of you but hopefully this is a new era in the Prem with all the mega money thats around next year for EVERYBODY the teams who buy well will get a shot at challenging for the top 4/6 rather than just the big boys affording to throw hundreds of millions on players and affording to land a few duds. West ham and Leicester have shown this year that its possible. I expect the top teams to improve massively next year.
Made up for Ranieri too, always liked him. Bellend Robbie Savage and Gary Linekar and the likes SLATING him when Leicester signed him. Now right up his arse. #experts |
DoofusWainwright
05.03.16 | Well the games between Spurs and Leicester were close ones. The most convincing win was a Spurs victory in the FA Cup. Their 1-0 win in the league was a fortunate one. Take away 3pts from Leicester and add 3 for Spurs and just how close would things be?
When Spurs have played well this season we look ten times the side Leicester are (so many more varied options) - just a shade inconsistent. |
Shemson
05.03.16 | A truly unbelievable achievement and I doubt we will ever see anything like it again! I feel sorry for Spurs because coming second any other year would've been viewed as the huge achievement it is and not that they bottled anything! If anything the likes of City, Chelsea, Arsenal and even Man Utd who all have superior squads to both of the teams at the top are the ones who bottled it! |
Shemson
05.03.16 | Oh and Everton of course. We bottle everything every year because we're Everton. |
TheWrenKing
05.03.16 | We don't bottle we implode |
DoofusWainwright
05.03.16 | Spurs just realised they were in the title race too late. Ranieri sussed which way the wind was blowing (all the big boys were playing shit) early - the first time he said something along the lines of 'I'm-a Italian nice man, we-a-not in the title race' you knew he knew they were going for it big time lol
Clever man, whipped up the national goodwill like a musical conductor |
Shemson
05.03.16 | Ranieri's press conferences this year have been amazing to be honest. Pheromone
05.03.16 | I actually meant of this season, didn't even think to clarify that for some reason. I enjoyed the through & through cuntery towards chelsea (who wouldnt want to scratch costa in the eye). I was just so hyped at 2-0 up and from that point onwards I lost sanity. |
DoofusWainwright
05.03.16 | Phero I was a bit disappointed, a loss would have been unthinkable so thank fuck that didn't happen - but Kane was incredible that first half. Still a lot of positive stuff. |

DoofusWainwright
05.03.16 | A couple could go - I think we need some attacking and midfield upgrades so can't keep Carroll, Mason, Bentaleb, Son, Chadli and N'Jie. Maybe lose two of those. Wimmer could ask to get a move too.
Other than that keep them all together and bring in four quality players for some depth. |

Spacesh1p
05.05.16 | Let's not overcook the Spurs goose here. You still only managed to be 7 points behind the champions and were knocked out of all cup competitions quite early. You've been playing much better football with an impressively robust squad, but the whole "Arsenal are a complete shambles" narrative while the English press ride your collective ween so hard that their rectums have disintegrated is pretty annoying. In my opinion. |
Deez
05.05.16 | Arsenal have been stagnant for years. Even their own fans are spouting theyre a complete shambles. Sure, many clubs would be content with consistent top 4 and maybe a trophy here and there but Spurs have clearly made a huge progression from where they are now compared to where have been. They have a great squad and a superb manager.Every reason to be positive. Whens the last time arsenal where challenging down to the last few games of a season? |
Spacesh1p
05.05.16 | I'm not trying to turn this into a Spurs v Arsenal debate, just commenting on the media narrative and how it is unfairly skewed towards Spurs, relative to Arsenal, West Ham, or anyone else this season. Trust me, I'm as fed up with Groundhog Day FC as much as any other fan, but that's no excuse to give Spurs "greatest ever runner up season title" when other sides have done more towards actually winning trophies than they have this season. Let's at least have a bit of perspective first - maybe this will be the season that we look back on where Tottenham became a consistent force in the league, domestic cups and Europe. But right now, Spurs are more or less 13/14 Liverpool until subsequent seasons prove otherwise. |
DoofusWainwright
05.05.16 | Spacesh1p I think you've got it wrong in that the media already sees Arsenal as a big team who are supposed to contest the title.
The media are used to laughing at Spurs, that's why the reaction. We actually look like, for once, we have our house in order and it appears that there just might be a plan in place.
Arsenal are still underperforming based on their recent history. |
Spacesh1p
05.05.16 | Agreed, Arsenal are underperforming and have been for a long time, but why does that excuse the way Spurs's season has been characterized this year? I'm not asking you to agree with me, this is just my 2c. |
DoofusWainwright
05.05.16 | Well, you could say the same about Leicester. They've won the league with a low points tally and no other trophies - why the big fuss? Just the context of them being massive underdogs and having some sort of feelgood factor going on/some English players. Plus Ranieri is an underdog himself and gets loads of 'lovely man' points
Same things are working for Spurs at a lower degree - hence lower reaction. Alli and Kane are the great hopes of the national team and they've come out of nowhere. 6 Spurs players could start for England at the Euros. Poch is a young and hip guy a la Jose the first time. All this adds to it.
Liverpool got just the same hype when they nearly won the league - Gerrard is a God, etc.
Three things the English media (and fans tbh) love are 1. underdogs and 2. togetherness/grit/passion (ugh 'Bulldog spirit') and 3. up and coming Brit (pref English) rising star
Arsenal won't get any media support while half your fans are against Wenger remaining/protesting/holding up banners. |
Egarran
05.05.16 | Barcelona would probably destroy them. I'm hoping for a Leicester-Atletico fixture. |
DoofusWainwright
05.05.16 | To be fair to Spurs, when we've played at our best this season we look a cut above anyone else's best. Some old frailties came to haunt us at the start and end of the season. Some of the middle of the season was outstanding though. |
adr
05.05.16 | Amazing achievement, the most consistent team in the league by far.
Arsenal couldn't even compete for the title when United/City/Chelsea were shit and Leicester and Tottenham aka loser mentality football club were the only real contenders lmao. Wenger forever please. |
Spacesh1p
05.05.16 | Totally agree with all three of your points regarding English media. I've been reading it for only the last 5 years or so but it's not exactly hard to pick up on. I take issue with the Leicester example as it is such an outlier that it can't really be used as a point of comparison here. Ex-Liverpool presence in the media helps explain the 13/14 Pool hype, but does not excuse it, agreed. I took the same issue with the reporting then, particularly the "universal" notion that Pool became "everyone's second team" that season, which was bandied about with grating regularity. |
Spacesh1p
05.05.16 | This isn't a long form defense for Arsenal, by the way, truly. Like I said, I had the same thoughts on Pool in 13/14 as Spuds in 15/16. |
anat
05.05.16 | I'm a neutral and have been impressed by both Leicester and Spurs this season. I feel hopeful that they will be in with a shout for 16/17 champions. |
DoofusWainwright
05.05.16 | adr they were consistent - but more 'always a shade better than the oppo' than 'stop the fight ref, they're going to kill him'.
Spurs had a fair few games like the latter and as a football fan they're the greatest thing, esp when you tonk a big team or rival (I never thought I'd see a goal difference like this for a Spurs team and that's what bodes well going forward).
Leicester politely snuffed most teams with a pillow of counter attack 1-0 wins. Like an assassin, effective but I'd like a bit more Vlad the Impaler entertainment (is this me saying as a Spurs fan I got bored to tears watching them the last couple of months? Yes).
I'll also say a London club is always up against it to win the league now - so many derbies and even yer Palace's raise their game significantly let alone Chelsea and West Ham. |
DoofusWainwright
05.05.16 | anatelier - still think Spurs should only be judged 4th or 5th favourites. Bookies have a tough job next season - what odds do they give Leicester to repeat the win?
Right now I'd say favourites should be: 1. Man City 2. Liverpool 3. Arsenal 4. Spurs 5. Man U 6. Chelsea 7. Leicester
Not sure how accurate that will prove to be, might have a flutter next season |
Sinternet
05.05.16 | I'm going to remain optimistic about Conte and say we'll be challenging for the title next season, expecting a complete overhaul in the summer with players like Oscar, Mikel and Remy on the out and hopefully a decent supporting striker for Costa and a backup DM. Defence needs some new blood too what with Terry starting to show his age despite his great performances. |
Deez
05.05.16 | Its all about perspective. I dont personally give 2 shits what the media have to say about any club cos they are a gang of agenda driven, murdoch paid, flip flopping cunts. Look at that bellened savage and Linekaar slagging ranieri off before hed even had a game. Im a liverpool fan and defo didnt feel the 'everyones second team' shit. Maybe outside the top 4/5. Wed gone from getting laughed at for appointing Rodgers to nearly winning the league. For sure a similar situation to spurs. Allthough more so the season we nearly won and should of won with torres/mascherano/alonso. Because we were never going to do as well once Suarez left.
Thats Luis Suarez the 'good player but not a goal scorer' that the said english press repeated in his 1st season. |
DoofusWainwright
05.05.16 | Sint - that being so, surely Chelsea still can't be seen as being in the top 4 favourites?
City with Pep you'd think are surely in a stronger starting position, Liverpool are showing signs of life under Klopp and you'd have to see them as real challengers next time, Arsenal are Arsenal - stable if they don't ditch Wenger, Spurs have promise and finished top 3 |
Spacesh1p
05.05.16 | Doof, trying to predict next season's results is as challenging as it has ever been, no question. I won't even hazard a guess yet.
Deez, I'm completely with you. It doesn't keep me up at night, but yes, they're all shit more or less. The Guardian are easily the best football site imo, followed by F365 (but they take their contrarian stances way too far for the sake of doing it sometimes), but the rest are basically worthless. |
Deez
05.05.16 | Also youve got Klopps second season and pep and contes first. As we all know it can take some bedding in. Allthough I imagine they will all spend. I still need to be convinced Klopp can get this team to defend, but im sure he'll by some actual defenders. I think well challenge for the top 4 next year. Obviously whoever takes over at Utd to will prove a big factor. But with all the premier league cash there could be some surprises again if other teams spend well Like west ham and Leicester this year. |
Deez
05.05.16 | yeah defo Space. Guardian are still trying to do sports journalism rather than gossip columns. f365 i go regularly but that place does my head in sometimes as you say. |
