08.03.16 | So with Massive Attack, the next thing you'll be recommended is Portishead and Tricky. That'd be 'Dummy' and 'Maxinquaye', respectively. And you'll probably hear about DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing'. All three of those, along with 'Mezzanine', are pillars of the genre--the 'Illmatics' and 'Ready To Dies' of Trip-Hop, if you will. So yeah, listen to them.
Getting that out of the way, check out Ulver's 'Perdition City'. It's a cool mix of trip hop and ambient music, but more on the trip-hop end. I really dig it myself. Metaform's 'Standing On The Shoulders of Giants' is also great (trip hop with some instrumental hip-hop flavor), as is Theivery Corporation's 'The Mirror Conspiracy' (lounge-y trip hop).
If you can stomach the vocals, Lunik's 'Weather' is similar to Zero 7 and Air, but a bit more poppy (still trip-hop enough, IMO). And Collide has a great album called 'Chasing The Ghost' which is actually not Trip-Hop, but combines dark wave and industrial in such a way that sounds eerily similar to it. Check out "Wings of Steel" or "Razor Sharp" to see what I mean.
Trip hop is great. All of it is worthy to explore. |
