Flug's September 2016 in Music

Here it is, i finally finished listening to all those records that i was interested in from september. What a crazy release month. Overall it somehow included many slight disappointments from high profile bands (Opeth, Neurosis, Insomnium, Alcest, Every Time I Die, Epica) but that didnt dampen the grandiosity that was this month. BIRB NAYSH YALL
33Bon Iver
22, A Million

folktronica
1.5/5
There is big ambition behind this but its just so fucking pretentious (i know, a burned word) and unlistenable. I as a newcomer to Bon Iver's music am just awestruck from how bad this is.
fav track: ????
32Banks
The Altar

r&b
2.0/5
I still after all these years can't understand the appeal of r&b music. This has some slightly interesting querks about it but the vocals and the overall sound turn me off big time.
fav track: Fuck With Myself
31Epica
The Holographic Principle

symphonic metal
2.5/5
Even before release i had a bad feeling about this album. Everything should be even bigger, more epic and more grandiose than on their last release. Sadly it doesnt work that way.
fav track: Universal Death Squad
30Eluvium
False Readings On

ambient
3.0/5
I might lack the patience to enjoy this nowadays but both Nightmare Ending and Copia had such unique atmospheres that i miss here.
fav tracks: ???
29Trap Them
Crown Feral

hardcore/death metal
3.0/5
A badass swedish dm guitar sound and run of the mill hardcore songwriting doesn't amount to much more than a solid but lackluster album.
fav track: Hellionaires
28Asphyx
Incoming Death

death metal
3.0/5
Im slightly sorrowful for the rating here but the vocals distracts me so much from the badass dm goodness. For more info read my soundoff.
fav track: Death: The Only Immortal
27Ghost (SWE)
Popestar

heavy metal/hard rock
3.0/5
One badass songs, two ok ones and two throwaway tracks.
fav track: Square Hammer (of course)
26Every Time I Die
Low Teens

metalcore
3.0/5
I don't know if this band grew off me or if this is just so much weaker then their other recent material. A few killer tracks in a see of ok beercore bangers.
fav track: Map Change
25Mare Cognitum
Luminiferous Aether

lunar black metal
3.0/5
This seems like fairly run of the mill slightly post rocky black metal to me. I might've not given it enough listens.
fav track: ??
24The Dear Hunter
Act V: Hymns With The Devil In Confessional

progressive rock
3.5/5
Im not familiar with the bands discog and i feel like you have to be to really appreciate this release. Regardless i'm still enjoying what they do here.
fav track: ??
23Heaven Shall Burn
Wanderer

melodic death/metalcore
3.5/5
Some solid tracks on this new offering from one of the most powerful livebands out there. The real treat here are the various cover songs tho (especially on the bonus disc).
fav track: Bring the War Home
22Insomnium
Winter's Gate

melodic death/prog metal
3.5/5
This is the "least" i enjoyed an Insomnium album at this point but i haven't really jammed these fuckers in a long time so they might've been grown off me a little.
fav track: Part 4 i guess lol
21Opeth
Sorceress

progressive rock
3.5/5
I wasnt really expecting that much from this album so the disappointment here wasnt that big. Im still a lil sad that both Neurosis and Opeth have released their "weakest" records so far tho, which does not mean that there are some very good songs on here.
fav track: The Wilde Flowers
20Danny Brown
Atrocity Exhibition

experimental hip-hop
3.5/5
So many good beats and a decline into madness. Unfortunately its to long and many tracks feel underdeveloped.
fav track: Dance In The Water
19Helms Alee
Stillicide

sludge metal/post hardcore
3.5/5
Check out my soundoff!
fav track: Meats and Milks
18clipping.
Splendor and Misery

experimental hip-hop
3.5/5
A short but rewarding hip-hop opera (wat).
fav track: All Black
17Alcest
Kodama

blackgaze/post rock
3.5/5
A slight disappointment as i somehow expected way more interesting songwriting and japanese influences. It still has blissful moments at best and easy listening passages at worst.
fav track: Kodama
16Street Sects
End Position

noisecore/industrial
3.5/5
Very impressive and savage debut album. Its a combination of genres that fit together perfectly but isnt that common.
fav track: Our Lesions
15Knorkator
Ich Bin Der Boss

alternative/fun metal
3.5/5
The heroes of my youth have returned and with them a heap of new witty songs to jam hard. Unfortunately its a lil short. Achtung! German lyrics.
fav track: Setz Dich hin
14Angel Olsen
MY WOMAN

indie folk/indie rock
3.5/5
This rocks very good and her voice rules!
fav track: Not Gonna Kill You
13In The Woods...
Pure

progressive metal
3.5/5
An overall great, slightly obscure prog metal record from those veterans. Its a good enough comeback album i guess.
fav track: Transmission Krs
12Delerium
Mythologie

trance/worldbeat
3.5/5
This album boasts one of the best songs of the year. Get on it!
fav track: Blue Fires
11Neurosis
Fires Within Fires

post metal
3.5/5
A disappointment coming from one of my very favourite bands. Its to short and doesnt really build up a cohesive atmosphere but the songs presented on here are still solid to excellent.
fav track: Fire Is The End Lesson
10Thy Catafalque
Meta

avant-garde/folk metal
4.0/5
Theres so much to explore on here. I initially thought this would end up higher but it slightly grew off me.
fav track: Malmok Járnak
9Norma Jean
Polar Similar

metalcore
4.0/5
Despite the flaws in production and vocals this is such a varied and intense listen.
fav track: Death Is a Living Partner
8Oathbreaker
Rheia

post metal/blackened hardcore
4.0/5
Some of the most savage moments of the month, especially on Second Son of R.
fav track: Being Able to Feel Nothing
7Obscure Sphinx
Epitaphs

post metal
4.0/5
Whats with all those amazing female vocalists in post metal lately?
fav track: nothing Left
6Preoccupations
Preoccupations

post punk/noise rock
4.0/5
A small musical revelation!
fav track: Memory
5Regina Spektor
Remember Us To Life

indie pop/anti-folk?
4.0/5
So witty, so cute!
fav track: The Trapper And The Furrier
4Devin Townsend Project
Transcendence

progressive metal
4.0/5
What can i say about my fav musician that i havent already. Probably the album i listened to the most from september.
fav track: Offer Your Light
3Kishi Bashi
Sonderlust

indie pop/70's synthpop revival
4.0/5
The most fun and uplifting jam i probably had all year.
fav track: Hey Big Star
2Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds
Skeleton Tree

avant-garde rock
4.5/5
Very oppressive atmosphere on here. Hearing Nick beeing even more miserable than usually really gets to me.
fav track: I Need You
1Touche Amore
Stage Four

post hardcore
4.5/5
Both Skeleton Tree and this where extremely touching and also some of the few records where i actually cared about the lyrics. This one hits a little closer to home since i dont have kids just yet.
fav track: Skyscraper
