| How I got into BM and harsh vocals
Harsh and growls had always been a turn off in Metal for me. I could stand them when mixed with clean vocals but never as the only type of vocals. But in my listening experience I found a few bands that got into them either by their musical composition or thanks to my curiosity. I won't talk about growls, but Agonist, Arch Enemy, Opeth, Amon Amarth and Gojira got me into them. I still don't like Brutal Death Metal though.
Same goes for Black Metal, list is those bands that got me into that style, yet I don't listen to Trve BM, needs a little bit more than that. List is in no order, I think this spans on 6 months of discoveries. | 1 | | Death The Sound of Perseverance
The voice is closer to BM than Death Metal here, and the music is outstanding, yet closer to DM than BM. This record helped me a lot with Harsh vocals | 2 | | Windir Arntor
I really can't explain how I liked them. I checked them out and was instantly curious to listen to that whole album, yet it wasn't something I should have liked. But I did, Windir is a genious band. | 3 | | Ulver Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
Clean and Harsh Vocals together, with some aggressive parts. Easy access into the style. | 4 | | Storm Nordavind
It's got that folkish BM style but with clean vocals. A side project of Fenrir of folk songs turned into BM styled songs. | 5 | | Caladan Brood Echoes Of Battle
Yeah, that's one hell of a good reason. Epic BM talking about the Malazan Books Of The Fallen. Loved the record so much I actually bought the first three books and am on the second one. I recommend to anyone who enjoyed GOT and LOTR. | 6 | | Vallendusk Black Clouds Gathering
This record also got me into bandcamp. I can't explain but I feel happy listening to this album, yet I don't think that's what they were trying to do. Anyway I loved the music and and started to enjoy the harsher vocals. | 7 | | Hoth Oathbreaker
Star Wars themed BM with Melodic intrumentalisation. | 8 | | Downfall of Nur Umbras de Barbagia
This records showed me that you can do even more with harsh vocals. Yeah I don't understand more than two-three words due to the production of the vocals (wind-like) but the emotions are there. | |

11.22.16 | I also have to add Summoning :) | altertide0
11.22.16 | Dm vocals are way harder to "get into" than bm ones imho. Both are silly, but the deep dm growls are much more "tryharded", unnatural, and therefore more visibly ridiculous compared to the bm screams, which are not that far from "normal", emotional screaming (depending on the case). | ramon.
11.22.16 | For me, it was second-hand listening to Whoracle by In Flames (my uncle listened to some damn good stuff) when I was still but a youngin' with no preconception as to what constituted as "popular" music. I distinctly remember my first conscious exposure to pop music, sitting in the back of my nan's car as Katy Perry came on the radio (family rarely listened to the radio as kids) and I couldn't figure out why she wasn't screaming. Didn't get properly dug into metal for years after but I still find it amusing that screams were more appropriate to my growing brain than actual singing. | Keyblade
11.22.16 | Silenius from summoning has the most ridiculous bm vox
one of his greatest gifts to the world was performing vocals on a few Abigor records | Astral Abortis
11.22.16 | I think a mix of listening to Opeth and lots of hardcore punk got me into harsh vox | rabidfish
11.22.16 | Napalm Death got me into extreme vox. So much silliness lol, love it. | Rastapunk
11.22.16 | In flames had harsh vocals before Jester Race by the way. | Gameofmetal
11.22.16 | for harsh vocals and heavier music, i just went from metallica to killswitch engage to heavier stuff. deathcore took me a bit but it opened me up to more extreme styles. black metal specifically i didnt get into until around the time i joined this site and it was caladan brood/wolves in the throne room that did it. | ScuroFantasma
11.22.16 | Sepultura got me into harsh(er) vocals and music - Chaos A.D. and Arise. Before that I was only interested in my nu-metal stuff. Gotta say too, most of these albums have such awesome art. Definitely a huge plus. | pjquinones747
11.22.16 | Nowadays harsh vocals don't do much for me most of the time. They're just kinda there and the music is what keeps me interest. | DungeonBoy
11.22.16 | In Flames - Whoracle
At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
Dark Tranquillity - Haven
Soilwork - The Chainheart Machine
Children of Bodom - Something Wild
Arch Enemy - Burning Bridges
Night In Gales - Thunderbeast
Shadows Fall - Of One Blood
...all got me into harsh vocals, as I was pretty much introduced to all of those bands at once. Changed my life. That felt very nostalgic typing that out (: | Brewtality91
11.22.16 | the lamest example? Three Days Grace. The one screamed part in 'Riot' was awesome. And also Rise Against has a couple songs where he screams.
Then it was basically Korn, Lamb of God, Dark Tranquillity and Amon Amarth back in '08 | Nazzadan
11.22.16 | I was big into Maiden and Megadeth when I was in early middle school, and I saw an edgy kid walk by in a Children of Bodom shirt. So I looked them up and gave them a listen. I transitioned into harsh vocals pretty easily, I never found them abrasive or barring my entry into more extreme subgenres. | JWT155
11.22.16 | I think Melo Death is a big gateway for a lot of people into the heavier stuff. | Nazzadan
11.22.16 | Agreed | Mystletainn
11.22.16 | I think all the vocalists on this list are pretty tame nowadays | Brewtality91
11.22.16 | Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation are entry level nowadays. Especially Cryptopsy. | Brewtality91
11.22.16 | Oh you like heavier music? Here's Tomb of the Mutilated, None so Vile and Effigy of the Forgotten. Have fun! | Rastapunk
11.22.16 | Like I said in the description. I don't like brutal DM or trve BM. |
